    Random slow start up

Hi I have a problem with my B7 A4 2.0T. I recently notice from time to time it takes a few more cranks for the car to startup. At very beginning I thought i only happened when I parked the car overnight. But this turns out not true. Now i think it is pure random.

Normally it takes 2-3 cranks before the engines starts, but sometimes it can take about 10 cranks to start. the car just had an oil change. Should I worry about it?

    Thanks.

Old battery? My moms car is having a similar issue and shes randomly getting P0089, I think its her in tank fuel pump ing out as it takes a long time to prime (3-5 seconds) whens the last time you replaced the fuel filter? I'd start with that

And it should have nothing to do with the oil change as long as its proper weight and not massively over filled causing the pistons to go through the oil, that's the only way I could see the oil change mattering lol

same here. Sometimes it takes literaly 0.5sec to start, and sometimes a bit more.
But I noticed this on all of my cars.

It depends on what position the engine was previously shutoff, the temperature, how long the key was on ON position, etc.

Can't tell with your info if it's a issue or just normal tho. You might just need some normal maintenance (batt, filters, injectors, sparkplugs)

    Thanks guys for the input.
I do not know when the fuel filter was replaced... Will have it checked. Is it costly to have it replaced? I did check the battery (3 years old), the check window is still black.

I'm not sure how much it would cost to have it changed but I can't imagine it being that much (I do ALL my own work), the fuel filter itself is around 30$ so with labor youd be looking at probably 80-150 depending how the shop charges their labor (if they charge an hour even if it takes ten minutes etc)

But that's where I'd start first

I found if I put it on accessory for a couple seconds it would crank over much more consistently. Might be that I was allowing the pumps to prime. So fuel filter isn't a bad bet.

Fuel filter is a complete DIY. Located inboard of the rear wheel underneath on the passenger side. Should some screws on the cover/lining you'll need to do, and IIRC (been a while), maybe a strap. After that disconnect the old one and replace.

Yes there is a strap, and the connections can be tough but just be patient and it'll come. It sounded like he/she just didn't wanna do it though or couldn't lol

can it also possible that the fuel bump is broken? I had the similar problem a few years ago. But then it was slow start most of the time esp in the cold morning. It was still under the warranty so the dealer took care of it. fuel bump is $$?

Ya I had suggested that as well, I figured he could try the filter first though and maybe edge out a bit more.

Try to listen to how long the pump takes to prime, my 2005.5 with 40k on it takes a half second, my moms same year with 140k takes about 3-5 seconds and she gets slow starting some mornings and is getting intermittent low fuel pressure code. I think its point to the pump being bad.

The pump itself is like 150-250 somewhere in there, that isn't that expensive, its all in the labor. Does the tank have to be dropped to change it? I coulda sworn it does, or maybe that was the volvo I just got rid of, one of the two.

You have checked your cam follower as well correct? As if the HPFP is worn it could be that as well

Download the PDF from first post, read thoroughly. It sounds daunting but isn't too bad, if you need help post in your region under regionals forum and you could offer somebody some cash to do it for ya. For someone experienced it takes about 25-30 minutes to pull it off and put it back

$250 is the lower end of the price on the LPFP, dealership wants over $400 and most auto parts stores are around $275-350. Online can be had for $250 or so. Don’t need to drop the tank, its located beneath the rear seats on the passenger side.

Ah okay, I never really looked up pricing for one yet, just saw in passing thanks for the info. I'm obviously confusing the volvo and the audi anyways (I used the same companies for parts lol) good to know the tank doesn't need to be dropped as well, makes it much easier

So I have done some good observation, now i concluded if the gas tank is more than 1/2 full I have no problem, once it is below 1/4 that and if i leave the car not running for hours then it happens.....
