Not sure how far I'll take this car since I bought it for my fiancé as her new daily. Although me being me, it already looks different than the day we got it.

We picked it up at Audi Wilmington in Delaware. Phenomenal bunch of guys there and their GM is an Audi enthusiast as well. Can't get better than that when buying a car!

Let's start with the options. I can type it out, but a screenshot of the sticker is easier.

Next up is delivery day. Audi Wilmington

Saying goodbye to the A3 convertible.

Bought my SQ5 there a week and a half ago. Detailing crew could use some lessons, but other than that, it was a pleasant experience.

Man, I cringe. There is no dealership detailing crew incented to devote the skills, proper materials, and time necessary to do things right. Easily 50% of my jobs are fixing what the dealership crew damaged. I always recommend insisting that the dealer stay hands-off. No washing, and definitely no polishing. (The smart premium dealers know this and contract out. It's beyond their scope of business and it's much easier to pay a sub.)

Sorry for the rant. If it helps to put it in real dollars, I tell my clients I can easily save them $300 if they bring me a new car that hasn't been "detailed" by the dealer.

In the meantime I decided to wrap the chrome window trim. I used shadow line vinyl which is overall crap. At least the matte version is. I'll probably wind up pulling and plasti dipping it.

Would be curious to hear how your plastidipping would go! The chrome goes beyond the doors so plastidipping would be an interesting endeavor. I'm guess you would have to seal off the interior of the car with plastic (both the door and seating area).

The vinyl looks good from the picture though!

The only vinyl I've ever used is shadow line but thinking maybe I should try something else after your comment... Is there a thicker vinyl?

Thanks! And yes, would definitely have to use a plastic tarp to properly seal off the interior. In my experience it's pretty easy to tape it all off with a thin plastic tarp tho.

I'm not happy with it at all. Seems very thin and tore a bunch of times. The vinyl they use is an Avery Dennison brand vinyl. Here's a pic I just took of the back of my roll. The only good thing is it's easy to apply since it's already cut in a small strip.

There really isn't a thick, durable vinyl because you lose elasticity and it's not really designed for protection. The best bet for that back corner is to buy a sheet that covers that back window then line up the narrower vinyl and run I the rest of the way. When you use the sheet you don't have to stretch and manipulate it around the back corner.

After the vinyl window trim drove me nuts, I decided to try my luck at plasti dip. I've always heard mixed reviews on this stuff. I have to say, after using it on this car I'm pretty impressed. Obviously wouldn't dip my whole car, but for the little stuff it's great!

Great work! The clean edges of the chrome for most of the car makes plastidip a suitable application. The thing that would drive me nuts is plastidipping the window trim haha!

Thanks! Yea I was surprised at how cleanly the plasti dip "cut" itself when I peeled it.

Thanks!! Good question. I refuse to black out the front rings. To me it's just not a good look. However, the grille itself is another story..

Let me just say, what a pain in the ass this was to properly tape up. I wanted to save the factory gloss black parts, instead of just spraying it all in dip and making it look cheap.

All prepped and ready to go

    After a few coats

Now the fun part...aka the tedious annoying part of peeling it the right way

Again, the most important part for me was making sure that whatever came gloss black from the factory, stayed that way.

    And the final result

Ecode time! Big thanks to drumnjuny for the awesome diy!

Pulling the Q5 bumper was actually very easy to do. I didn't take many pics as I just wanted to get this project done.

Your prep work makes my OCD feel very safe, content, and at peace with the world. Kudos! You've totally nailed the essence and have shown what it takes for Plasti-Dip to look good, and perhaps more important, for it to be durable. Tangent....this exactly comes to mind for me when people ask me why it costs so much to apply a ceramic paint coating when it's so easy to do. You're not paying for the coating application, which itself really is incredibly easy, you're paying for the six hours of washing, decontamination, polishing/jeweling, and residual it took to make the coating do its thing.

Nice work! The machine looks terrific.

Fantastic job with the plastidip! Being meticulous really paid off. It looks practically OEM. It must have taken you quite a while just to tape up the grill properly like that. Do you mind me asking how long it took for the entire job?

The ecodes cleans up the front end so nicely. I'm going to eventually have to get a pair... :/

Thanks for the kind words!! I literally LOL'd at the part about your OCD. Don't feel bad, I have the same exact problem, which is why it took FOREVER to tape everything off the right way.

About your customers... yup, if someone has never done this type of job before, they'll never understand the amount of labor that goes into it. Total PITA.

The ecodes cleans up the front end so nicely. I'm going to eventually have to get a pair... :/
Thank you! Agreed on the dip. It seems like time and patience is the key to this stuff. I don't remember exactly, but it took a few hours. Probably between 1-2 hours to tape the grille, about 1:45 to dip the grille (7 coats @ 15mins in between for durability), and probably another hour or more to do the peeling. So probably like 4-5 hours total. Totally worth doing it that way and taking my time. Im 100% happy with the outcome of it.

Ecodes - Yes they're a must do mod in my book! When I had my S5, the guys were calling them "deezcodes" because I was so obsessed with them haha.

Looks great! Thanks for inspiring me to do this (blackout grille), but I'll wait for the weather to cool down.

Here's another shot. I made sure to dip back far enough so when the cover went on, it kept a clean line going under it.

Looking great, very nice detailed work on the grill. How about some side shots, curious how the lower molding looks.

What are your plans for wheels and suspension?

Thanks! For wheels and suspension I have no solid thing yet. I toss different ideas in my mind around every day.

Not sure if I want the Bilstein/H&R combo that everyone seems to be happy with, or just full coilovers. I never adjust the coils once I have them on so it might be a waste.
Also debating on 20" or 21" wheels. The struggle is real.

I'll try and get some shots of the lower molding in a bit.

Super impressed man. I think I'm going to give dipping a few pieces a try after seeing your end result. How many coats did you use? And did you have to do anything special to peel off the extra cleanly or does it pretty much separate itself when you pull? I was also thinking of using a couple of coats of glossifier on top.

And as for the suspension, you strike me as someone who should probably just get the KW street comfort coilovers now LOL. If you will only ever want a moderate drop though, the H&R + B8 combo is great.

Thanks man. I used about 7 coats, spraying from different angles each time to ensure proper coverage of the entire piece.

I was impressed with how cleanly and easily it cut itself as I pulled it off. Didn't do anything special. Just remember to overspray and get it on the car about 1" around the pieces you are dipping, and make the overspray thick or it won't peel right. Just YouTube any videos on plasti dip and you'll see what I mean.

I bought the glossifier as well and I tested it on my old "V6T" badges from my S4. It doesn't look horrible, but I preferred the matte finish on the Q5 once I saw it.

As for the suspension, this is my fiancés daily so I don't want to go too crazy. A moderate drop is probably good enough to clean up the fender gap and make it look better. As I mentioned before, in any of my cars, I've never adjusted the coils once they were installed. So it's probably not necessary to install coils on the Q unless I can get good coils for the same price as the shock/spring combo.

Using my been-married-awhile-ometer, I'd recommend the H&R's/B8's + 20's without a moment's hesitation. I am amazed at the ride quality (I'm on 21's...but I gotta' tellya'....those black 20x10 BBS CI-R's are calling my name). The coilovers will obviously get you lower, but if 'moderate' will work for you, marital harmony isn't your only reward. Any lower, and parking curbs and steep driveways come into play. Finally, not sure if this is a factor in your household, but my wife has mentioned multiple times that she loves an SUV because it sits higher and the visibility gives her confidence. Anyway...

Thanks man I appreciate the married guy advice! Moderate is more than enough. For her the height isn't a big concern. She had a coupe, and also the A3 convertible before this, and those were really low to the ground compared to the Q. I personally feel better with her up higher in an SUV, and she's liking it as well. Much safer IMO. Im strongly leaning towards that H&R/Bilstein combo for sure. Was also thinking 20's just to give her a little more cushion on the ride too.

CI-R's are nice. Ive always been a BBS fan. Ran CH-R's on my S5. What tire size are you running on the 21's?
