    Vibrations - prop center shaft?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Fighting vibrations. Wheels tires balanced twice, additional 3rd time load balanced. Test with winter wheels/tires (still). Front new lower controls arms, wheel bearings, drive shafts.

Vibrations under load and no load.

Is there a way to test if the prop shaft might be the cause?
I have a 2003 A6 shaft here; does it fit (both tiptronic cars)?

    After
    - new wheel bearing (needed anyways)
    - new drive axles (while at it)
    - new lower control arms (needed)
    - recent upper control arms
    - recent tie rods
    - new alignment
    - triple (2x standard, 1x load balancing)
    - tire/wheel swap

    then
    - 3M Window Weld treatment of center support bearing (did not look bad, but did anyways)

I know think what is the cause of my vibrations:

There's a bolt in the middle of that flange right?

Might try backing it out, loctite, then torque it back how it gotta be. Might do it?

I will take drive axle off and check. I only removed that flange on a Golf IV when we had a output shaft leak. Need to read up on the 5HP19 out flange/shaft.
Anyone have DIY instruction how to (potentially) replace an output shaft, output shaft bearing?

Wow! that does look a tad wobbly. You may have to go the Bentley route for repairs. That or ship it to Level 10

Does the other side move as much?

    Just throwing this out there...

What is the condition of the shocks, rear control arm bushings, rear diff mount bushing?

No, other side does not move at all (compared to the observed driver side movement).

Looking for DIY instructions how to fix the play.

B5 same as C5? Auto same as manual?

Link refers to B5, not sure is auto or manual:

    Remove the exhaust

    Drain trans fluid

Remove the LH and RH driveshafts at the trans.

Use wire to tie them up out of the way.

Get a couple of bolts that are the same size as the DS attachment bolts but about 2" longer.

Use these bolts as jacking screws to remove the DS flanges.

Remove the differential cover by removing the bolts and using a screwdriver to pry the cover off. DO NOT PRY ON THE MATING SURFACES!!!!!

remove the differential. Once you start to move it out, you are able to change the angle and remove it fully from the trans.

I have done this three separate times on a '01 S4, '97 A4 and a '95?? 90. Its tight, but it can be done.

Also, you are not draining the transmission fluid with the auto. The diff has its own fluid. It will come out when you remove the flange.

Not sure, I have never done this. You also should be checking lash which is set with different thickness washers. This may not be an issue, but I don't know.

Sure, thought it got added last post. I thought my drive shaft was causing the vibes but it was just the rear diff flanges/bearings. Studied this post and the Bentley before I went at it.

Did you get new output shafts? Where did you get them from/find them?
How bad was the wear, i.e. shaft diameter worn vs new?

I had to find a used diff from a local yard here in town. The diff flanges on the used diff looked pretty good. I measured a difference of .11 to .16 mm with a dial caliper old vs. newish flanges. The give away was the play I had in the rear diff flanges. The front diff had no play, none whatsoever but the rear was about 3-4 millimeters I guess.

I only had vibes about 65 and up, esp around 80.

    Thanks for the data.

    Has anyone taken measurements?

Has anyone else found correlation between output shaft wear and vibrations?
