Help my girlfriend keep the Audi: slow oil leak

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys. I usually hang out on the BMW E46 forums. I wanted my girlfriend to end up there too, but she fell in love with an Audi and I wanted her to love what she got. Today she left my place and called me when she got home that her car was giving an oil warning. Long story short, I physically checked her oil and she is just below the minimum mark. I am going to Audi tomorrow to buy her oil. She's owned the car since November, and this is the first time (that I know of...) that it has complained. Any idea where there could be a slow leak? She drives her car the way your great great great grandpa would if he was still alive, so it's not from abuse.

I looked up some common oil leaks, but didn't see anything matching what I saw. There was some wet stuff behind the engine, on top of the transmission. It seems that that's more tied to the coolant flange. I didn't check her coolant level... Other than that: Bottom cover, clean. Bottom of car behind cover, clean. headers, dry. Right side of engine bay, dry.

Let me know! Also, totally jealous of the wrenching space you guys have. You have to remove like 8 things to do any maitnence on my beemer!

Your thread title and description is kind of amusing. Makes one think, but anyway congrats on the ride. What year is the car and what kind of miles are we talking about? Keep your eyes around the valve gasket cover and the (lower pcv) turbo inlet tube, and yes, always make sure there is enough oil in the engine because the B7 is known to burn lots of it. 'Top her off' and you shall be fine.

As already stated the b7 is known to burn oil but there's rumors of oil type that doesn't burn. I think I read something about mobile 1. But come to think of it I think that's for the b6 1.8t.

    Common B7 oil leaks:

    - Oil filter housing / gasket (You can change the oil filter gasket and oil cooler gasket while you're in there).

    - Vacuum pump (stick your hand behind the pump and feel the hoses back there, most likely oily. Replace pump. Replacing the seal on the vacuum pump does absolutely nothing as that's not where it leaks from.

Definitely not a oil that doesn't burn. Piston rings, valve seals/guides, turbo, bad valve cover dumping oil into IC pipes, bad PCV, etc.

Btw I hope that S13 vert has an SR in it.

Wait. You haven't topped off oil since November and only now you have a low oil light? Wanna sell it to me? Consider you lucky kid.

PS. Do you like to get dry raped? If so, go to Audi for oil. If you like a smoother interaction go to Walmart or Amazon.

What year is the car? The earlier B7s with BPG engines seemed to have less oil issues.

How many miles since the last oil change? For now, go to Walmart, pick up some Rotella T6 and just keep an eye on the level and top off as needed.

First of all, thanks for the overwhelming support! She quietly talks about dumping the car during it's first issue. She gets scared because of all the time and labor I've put into my BMW, and I told her the maintenance toll is roughly the same. What she can't understand is that my car was the equivalent of a lemon. That and we paid a "premium" for this car, because we got it from an Audi dealer that I've worked closely with since then (yes, even though I own a BMW. The BMW dealer is rude as sh*t!) Her Audi is a 2006 A4 2.0T FWD. I checked the odometer and she has 54,424 miles as of this morning. Also why we paid a premium (very tip of KBB, so not too bad. It was worth it.).

I'm happy to hear this car just burns oil! I forgot cars do this since my E46 doesn't take a drop between oil changes. In her defense, her only driving is to her clients and school, all of which are within 15 miles easy.

I went to my Audi dealer and just got what they recommended. The cars last oil change was there, so might as well get the same oil. I don't know why you guys said Walmart and other places. The "OEM" stuff was under $10. Odd that you guys done have Audi branded oil... (living that BMW life)

I topped her off this morning. She hates being "inconvenienced" longer than 3 minutes. You wouldn't believe the simple things she'd avoid. Last night she said, "I don't want to do this tomorrow morning." I kept asking her why, re-explaining I just had to pour it in. I basically said I'll be at your car right before you leave and you better not start it until I give it oil. I thought I trained her better than this! She knows all the BMW chassis but not the importance of oil. She unlocked her car from a distance and I had the new oil in by the time she approached the car!

Where should I be looking for these leaks? I know nothing about turbos...

A lot of people recommend the rotella T6 that you can get at Walmart b/c they have done oil analysis on it after a change and it hold up well for a good price (I have a subscribe and save from amazon for $19 per gallon delivered).

I didn't see if you noted it, but how many miles since the last oil change?

Oh alright. Perhaps for her next oil change we will do T6, if she even wants to DIY. I asked Audi when her oil was changed, but they couldn't tell me without her VIN, so we're going to ask tomorrow. I would assume Audi would change the oil on it's own cars...

I switched to Liqui-moly 0w40 synthetic and don't burn a drop for the first 2,500-3,000 km after a change compared to 1/4 liter every 2 tanks on everything else I've tried (Motul, mobil1, rotella t6, and castrol). Maybe give that a shot next oil change.

I'll have to give the rotella t6 a shot in this thing as it did wonders on my motorcycle! I almost bought it and threw it in for shts and giggles, maybe I should've! The Kawasaki I had had wicked valve chatter from the hydraulic lifters, after the rotella the clutch grabbed better and you could barely hear the bike run!

Its more so a weight of oil that supposedly burns less, I read a couple of threads saying when people went to 0w-40 they burned a lot less oil. Audi doesn't explicitly suggest it which is surprising to me as the lower weight causes less of a dry start especially during winter (which you want for turbo life)

In regards to looking for the oil leaks, the oil filter housing and oil cooler are on right side of engine, it looks like and leaks from the same style plastic housing as the late 90's early 2000's BMWs which had common leaks in the same spot. The vacuum pump is on the back of the head and is like a plastic circle with a vacuum line sticking out heading towards the right side of the car, reach your hand back there (when cold!) and you can't miss it. This leak may explain the oil you saw on top of the transmission, but again. It might not be leaking at all and just burning it (theres even a warning in the oil section about how much the car will burn oil! Dont believe me, take a look!) and this isn't something that Audi figured out later, I have a 2005.5 (first year/model) and my manual warns of the car burning oil lol

If shes that fussy...........hmmmmm, maybe an Audi isnt the car for her. They can be a bit temperamental...more so than the BMW--especially the E46 which I have heard is a solid car.

Vacuum pump leak can cause oil on transmission. Just try to reach below vacuum pump and check if any oil leaking.

Actually the s13 does not have a SR. I have everything for the swap minus motor and 5-speed swap. My audi is giving me a headache so ima have to get rid of it. Ill sell it to you with everything if you want it. Interior does need some TLC. I was literally like how the hell does he know i have a vert!? I forgot i put that on my profile.
