    PSA : "sealing" oil funnels

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I got one of those funnels that locks into the valve cover and makes a seal to prevent spills as a gift. Seems like it would be really handy...

However - just found Audi TSB : 2033576

    "Technical Background
When an unapproved aftermarket speed-filling device is used to add oil to the engine, the increased oil flow rate may force oil into the intake manifold or combustion chamber, creating the potential for engine damage.
    ... <snip>
    Warning:
Do not use aftermarket speed-filling devices and funnels that have an airtight seal at the filler cap, as they are not approved. Damages caused by speed-filling devices and funnels that have an airtight seal at the filler cap are not warrantable and will not be reimbursed.

I would assume they are referring to the "reel" types. At my dealer we program the amount of oil needed and pump it into the valve cover. 5 quarts happens in under 30 seconds. As long as you are pouring it conservatively, I would think you are okay

A funnel isn't going to hurt anything if you pour into it.

The issue is that such a large volume of oil is poured in that it actually backs up into places you don't want it. Any non sealing funnel works just fine. There is no need to dumps several quarts in seconds. If you do, then you shouldnt be changing the oil yourself.

    Hmmm....
this doesn't apply to your gravity fed funnel, this is for something that forcibly pumps oil in.
