i got a good deal on pennzoil platinum oil (full synthetic) and i'm wondering if using it will really be detrimental to the engine. i doubt it but you never know.

5w20 is not the correct spec oil. 5w40 or 5w30 if in a pinch.

i know. i've only used that and 0W-40. i'm thinking about going on the wild side. the engine runs cool even in the summer so i wonder what this change may do.

I don't think 20 weight oil will hold up very well in this car due to the turbo. Also with it being summer time it's not the best idea to run a 20 weight oil.

Switched up on the Rotella T6 and ran Mobil 5w-40 for a Florida run from North Jersey and back. No issues at all. Barely burned anything on the entire trip of over 2900 miles. To me the car is running and has been running amazing since the swap. And oil is consumption is gone unless I'm ripping the car and you'll get the plume of carbon deposit.

I would say on my car which routinely burns a quart of Rotella by 1500-2000mi, Mobil is FTFW. Gonna try it again and see how it works.

OP: Pennzoil isn't terrible. But never did a full change on it. Tended to burn up fast when I used it to top off in a pinch.

5w30 is a bit light... lets say you save $20.00 on the oil and you change your oil twice a year. You're saving a total of roughly .01 a day and potentially toasting your turbo.

lol...you're asking about non VW approved oil in a lower viscosity than required and expect to hear what you want to hear. It's your car, good luck.

i searched around about this question and it was also asked in a passat forum by someone else and someone replied that all he uses is 5W-30. how much savings? $30 saved for a 5 L jug.

i'm not looking for editorial answers. i want to know from people who have done this.

And nobody has ran lower viscosity oil in these engines. Theres even a warning about it in the manual, emergencies only and don't use more than a quart of lower viscosity oil. The turbo we'll be eating it like potatoe chips and shit out carbon bricks very quickly. Look into the early 2000's Saab sludge issues. Your pretty much purposely causing the same issue for no reason than to save a couple bucks. Idiotic. Saabs had the issue of them suggesting running 5w-30 in a turbod engine. Nuff said.

Theres nothing to gain by running the wrong viscosity like that other than maybe wanting to convince your spouse to let you buy a new engine?

    Plaistow?
Yep! I don't know if it still is, I sure hope so so I can pick up some before the deal is done! It's been on sale for awhile now too so its probably ending soon!

I keep seeing an ad on here about Mobil 1 being 27.99 at Advance auto parts too till august something, which is cheaper than autozone's 35$ but I think thats the same as walmarts regular price.

So glad they started carrying 0w-40 (especially in a gallon!) when I owned my saab, I could only find it in quarts at autozone! 8.99 a quart!

Damn dude, think of all the vegetables that had to die just so you can drive your car. I took the Bear Grills approach and just pissed in my engine. Runs great!

I'll try that next oil change. Better start saving up now. Anyone have any extra bottles I can use? I prefer at least a Gatorade size cap.

here's a quote from the pennzoil site:
Pennzoil Platinum motor oil meets or exceeds:
    • North American warranty requirements for U.S., European and Japanese cars and light trucks with gasoline and gasoline
turbo-charged engines where API SM and earlier API categories are specified

also some history on my car; i ran nothing but mobil 1 0W-40 on the first engine. the oil consumption got worse with time then the oil pump failed at 100,000 miles.

Did you have proof the oil caused it? I'm guessing you opened up the engine, did it have oil caked everywhere? If it did, did you regularly let the engine idle after driving to flow oil through the turbo so as not to cook it? Did you do engine flushes to get the caked carbon out? (assuming thats what did it), and theres no proof that going to the incorrect oil weight (especially something that is a lower high temperature limit!) will help to prevent what happened, if anything go to a higher limit! They do sell 5w-50, its diesel oil, expensive as (again WalMart) or even run rotella t6 which is probably what I've going to next oil change, again since its designed for diesels which have larger turbos and more heat. I guess you'll be the guinea pig to see what happens running the (proven) wrong weight in a turbo'd engine for its life and see how long it'll last (well other than all those 2000's Saabs anyways) let us know how it goes!

look at all of the answers-anecdotal. look at the answers i'm looking for. quite frankly, it's people who have little knowledge who tend to spout off BS the most on the internet. i often have to get audi answers on non audi forums. what does that say about this site?

and all those years of running VW approved 0W-40 sure seemed to increase the tolerances in the engine-given the increased oil consumption. that's how much faith i have in running "proper" oil.
