Well I caught my car on fire..

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Last night after doing some runs in Mexico, at certain rates of speed, my buddy and I noticed a bit of smoke coming from my engine bay. At first I thought maybe a coolant hose leak or something with fluid under pressure but it turns out my heat shield by my test pipe-downpipe had fallen down and caught fire.

the flame kicked up when I opened my hood. We grabbed as much water as we could find in my car and my buddy ran into the strip club next door to the place I stopped screaming I need water my buddies car is on fire.

Long story short we got it out quickly and there isn't any damage outside of the heat shield being burnt up.

Bought a car fire extinguisher and cleared out the remains and got it home. The shield is toasted, not useable.

Is there a better way to make a heat shield or should I just replace it with a stock one. I am going to check for exhaust leaks near the area as well to see if there was anything going but I don't want to waste my time if the stock heat shield will just rot out, fall, and burn up again.

Isn't the stock heat shield made of aluminum? How did it catch fire? Aluminum has to get VERY hot before it burns.

Well the padding on the backside of it is what actually caught fire. Not the metal itself.

I am wondering if it would be better to make my own, or wrap my exhaust. Plus I do not know where to source a new one lol.

Yeah it was scary. Used water from the back of a toilet in a strip club because the coolant jug wouldnt fit anywhere else haha.

    Lol

I might be pulling this heat shield out of my car if it's prone to spontaneous combustion... You could always replace it with the reflect-a-gold sheeting.

Actually mine didnt catch on fire like yours did. I kept on smelling something burning. So I put it up on our clubs lift and seen the embers of the padding glowing. The heat shield had somehow dropped from the fastners. I ed one from a scrap car we had in the yard and ed it. Job ed. I was scared as thought she was going to burn. And all I have is liability insurance on the car

I do not believe it was spontaneous. It was probably burning for a long time and this was just the worst time it happened due to our... enthusiastic driving. I am thinking I will make my own with aluminum sheeting, reflective duct tape, and fiberglass sheets. Seems easy enough.

I wish we had any scrap cars around here. I was looking for a few small parts I didn't want to spend $$$$ on a while back and I couldn't find anything near us and we have 7 junk yards within 10 mins of each other.

If you can't find anything used, I'd pick up some of this stuff. http://www.thermalcontrolproducts.co...zeroclearance/
It really is zero clearance. I have it almost resting on my downpipe.

Water is the last thing I'd try to put a car fire out with.

Only thing I had so I had to try it. There was no way else to get to it outside of spraying water with a water bottle. Luckily I had one of those bottles with the fancy tops that spray water far.

We were in a parking lot at 0300 hours with fire. Water worked lol. But I understand your caution. Bought a extinguisher for my car 5 mins later.

This exact thing happened to me aswell. Luckily I caught it in time. Ran a red light, ripped into a Grocery store parking lot, pulled up in front of the doors and ran in, grabbed an extinguisher off the wall and super soaked that ho

I don't need an entire car lol. Only part of a heat shield took damage. Like $10-20 worth of damage.

Same thing happened to me back in 2010 or 2011. The dealer replaced the heat shield with an updated part that is mostly aluminum. I also had a shop weld on a piece of stainless halfway around the DP, spaced a little from the DP (a secondary heat shield I guess). Haven't had an issue since. Definitely a design flaw.

Im glad it wasn't just me. I am having a custom exhaust made since mine was destroyed by a cinderblock in the highway a while ago and ill see if the guy will add a custom heat shield with the DP.
