Clicking When Driving in Rear of Vehicle

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have just noticed some clicking from the rear and I need some advice from members who know about this or have been through the same dilemma. When making a right turn the clicking basically goes away but when making a left turn it seems like the clicking shifts to the right side of the vehicle (maybe because the weight shifts to that side of the vehicle in the turn?). When driving straight the clicking is heard mostly on the left side. I'm thinking it is the CV joint? The noise is speed related so it occurs about the same speed the wheel makes one revolution. No idea if it is the CV joint as I have never had these issues before. I can't see any split CV boots but the drivers side axle on the inner boot side looks quite dirty, while the passenger inner side of the axle looks quite clean and is just surface rust.

    Here are some photos.

Are you sure its clicking? Doesn't look like your CV boots are ripped. You would hear a thumping sort of noise. Do you feel anything in your pedals while driving. Since you are hearing it while you are driving straight it sounds like a wheel bearing. I just went through all this and this is what I found it to be the problem. Drove me nuts for a very long time. Here is the link to the one I bought and replaced it with. I keep it bookmarked and ebay just in case I have to replace the other one.

100% it is clicking. The boots look fine and everything feels normal. I dont get any feedback in the pedals when i accelerate and decelerate. Do you think it could be bad wheel bearing? i hear clunks when going over bumps...

Shocky upper mounts may be bad. Mine does it too, replacing all corners with the B12 kit.

I believe it's the bearings. If something was loose I think you'd hear a more pronounced clunk of some sort. The trick is figuring out which side it really is. Generally it's the side that has the load on it makes the noise. Turn left, sound comes from right, right side is the effected side.

Sounds like wheel bearings to me. FYI the special tool for the rear wheel bearings from ecs didnt fit for me. It needed quite a bit of modification.

Ditto on the wheel bearings, especially if you hear it while turning.
These are easy to check, just jack the rear up and see if there's up & down play in the wheel.

Finally had some time today to take a look. Well i lifted the rear end and no movement really. I also set chocks on the front wheels and put the tranny into neutral with the rear still lifted and started spinning. Seems like the noise is coming from driver side near the wheel. So thankfully its not inner CV.

Heres a video for review. https://youtu.be/aXcbkXUwZeM

At first i thought it was something hitting the dust cover but i checked there was nothing. So is there someone that has a diy for the rear wheel bearing? I remember seeing someone replacing these recently but cant remember who.

That does not sounds like a wheel bearing. I don't know what that is but I would take the wheel off and check around the brake pads and surrounding parts that move. I don't think you would hear that noise that easily if it was a wheel bearing. IF it is a wheel bearing then you might actually be to the point where its not advised to drive it until its fixed.

clicking is almost always a bad cv joint. wheel bearings tend to hum im sure you are ging to take the axles off and find cv joints worn. it is a lot easier than doing a wheel bearing and race ( just messy ).

yeah that I would not consider " clicking" that's is the classic scraping sound. Anyway glad you got it solved cheaply and effectively .

It was a clicking noise, but i think that when things are truly bad with the drivetrain you will usually hear it inside the cabin with the windows rolled up. With my issue i only heard it if the windows were rolled down.
