Quick question for those with manual transmissions!

    Folks,

I was wondering if anyone has figured out a way to adjust the side-to-side play of the shifter before you can feel the springs engage. In other words, the shifter is sitting dead center when in neutral, then for example, to engage first gear one must bring the shifter to the left (where a spring can be felt putting resistance) and forward. Same in regards to fifth and sixth gears, where there is another spring when pushing the shifter to the right. Now if you sit in the car and move the shifter a bit side to side, you may notice that there is a bit of play before you can feel either spring put resistance. All cars are different and in the past this has never bothered me with any car, just wondering if this is adjustable.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

I believe many of the aftermarket short shifters reduce that side to side slop. For instance, my Eurocode short shifter paired with the JHM solid linkage has made gear changes extremely tight and tactile.

The side to side slop is due to the worn out shifter linkage not the shifter itself. There is a plastic ball joint on the oem shift linkage that wears out.

As far as I know, JHM is the only company with an aftermarket shift linkage.

Interesting...I could have sworn there are springs on each side. I knew about the ball joint, I thought the joint is responsible for the movement itself and not the resistance, which is provided by springs?

I would assume there is some form of spring return to the middle of neutral inside the transmission itself. But the slop you're feeling before the resistance is due to the shift linkage and shifter.

Thanks folks...the slack is not much, maybe .5" travel, but in comparison with other transmissions, this is definitely not the tightest. Also, I think by default there's always a slight amount of play.
