    Issue with windshield.

So I washed my car for the first time a few weeks ago and noticed something very strange. I thought it was dirty with the regular bugs, dirt, and water spots. But there seems to be hundreds of tiny rock chips all over the windshield. Im talking about tiny little pinpoints that you can only see in direct sunlight. I can feel them when I run my fingernail over them. This is the fourth car I've owned and none of them have had this issue and theyve all had 30-50k miles more than my Avant does.

I'm confused why my Avant's windshield seems to be "softer" than any other car I've owned.

Could it be some sort of protective coating/film?

Any ideas of what I should do?

Here in Colorado, windshields take an extraordinary beating.

Do an Internet search on steel wool windshield cleaning and see if that could be an option for you.

I've got the same thing. However, I've got the original glass on a 15 year old C5 A6.

This may sound crazy but it may be the towel you're using to wash the windshield. I thought my windshield was filled with hundreds of chips, that only showed up in direct sunlight. It turned out that he microfiber towels I was using was leaving a ton of lint.

Windshield angle, ride height, type of road you drive, level of highway maintenance, where the car is typically parked, etc. all influence how quickly your windshield turns into a kaleidoscope :)

Shouldn't be more than $300-400 for a new windshield, make sure it is Saint-Gobain or Pilkington.

Thanks guys for all the replies. I just wanted to see if it was something different about my car to cause this. I'll try a few things, don't think I'll replace it unless my insurance will cover it.

If you have full coverage they will. If not, get glass coverage now and have it replaced after the winter.

Not true...I have full coverage and no way in hell will they replace a windshield here in NV. May have something to do with all the rocks around this place.

When I lived in FL it was a different story.

Here in Colorado, you can get specific windshield coverage. Zero Deductible and dirt cheap --- only adds $8 per year to my premium.

Having been out to Colorado recently I can see why they would say that. As mentioned above though there may be an add on that the OP could get though.
