S4 B8 OE coolant pump 100% duty cycle

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I did this mod today, very easy if you dont want it switched as it only requires the cutting of 1 wire.
The wire is Yellow/blue on my 2010 & according to the below it is the same on a 14 (thanks to @beans912 for the diagram )

The wire is located in the wiring shown being held in the below pic

The pump runs at 100% constantly once the the engine is running ,but slows to a much slower rate when the engine is off & ignition is on.
The pump stops completely about 20 seconds after removing the key from the ignition

I did some logs today & the temps didn't go over 63c & that was @ 6300rpm in 5th gear
    The outside temp was 23.5c

    Log is here https://www.dropbox.com/s/gbronxl9kw..._%266.CSV?dl=0

What were the temps before, while taking outside temp into consideration? Did you do logs of it stock and then cut and then log again, preferably around the same time on the same day? BTW, it probably would have been better (so you could put it back to stock) if you had unplugged the harness plug off the pump and then just pulled the wire pin out of the plug and electrical taping it to the harness out of the way and sealed from the environment. Just a thought for those thinking of doing this mod.

I have logs from a different day,

    Pre pump mod
    outside temps were 20c https://www.dropbox.com/s/jjkyiscbz3...-4191.CSV?dl=0

    Post pump mod
    Today,outside 23.5c
    3rd gear 2000rpm to 6900rpm
start temp 38.25c finish temp 37.5c
    into 4th gear 4500rpm to 6900rpm
start temp 38.25c finish temp 43.5c

I should add that I have put connector on the cut wire in case I wish to put it back

Good stuff. However, this would shorten the pumps lifespan. It's costs of modding

I guess I dont understand your first post. You said when the engine is on its at 100%, and when the engine AND ignition are on it slows? Please explain this a little bit to me because when the engine is on isnt the ignition on? Im a little confused. Does it run when the engine is off and accessory mode on? And what did you do with that wire exaclty, just cut it and add connectors? Did this cause a code of any kind. Let me know ASAP. Looking to hit the track today and would really like to do this, temps outside are a non favorable 90.

Not sure on the first question but to the second:

If you cut the wire or short it to positive it will run the pump in "emergency mode" which is 100%.

He just added the connectors so he could restore normal functionality later.

If you are going to the track I would absolutely cut it

xpoweruk is not the first to do this mod.

Does it throw a code just cutting the wire?

    It should of read
The pump runs at 100% constantly once the the engine is running ,but slows to a much slower rate when the engine is off & ignition is on.
The pump stops completely about 20 seconds after removing the key from the ignition

It does throw a code, but it's a soft code so no MIL is thrown

Perfect! that is exactly what I wanted to know, and it does run with the engine off and ignition on. Awesome Thanks alot? Doing this as soon as I get out of work. And to make sure, all you did was cut that yellow/blue wire?

Awesome. Proof of some of the discussion in my thread on the pump supposedly not working.

Great job on being willing to try it. Like others have said may be a great way to address heat when at the track and waiting in staging lanes.

That is my thought exactly, with that added heat exchanger and the two 9" fans I have behind them wired to a switch, if i can have the engine off in the staging lanes and the fans on and coolant pumping through there, that sounds like the best scenario to combat heat at the track!

Be forewarned, a new OEM pump retails for $556, and there are not many aftermarket pumps that outflow it. It is PWM controlled from the engine computer so it does not have to run at 100% all the time, and was not designed to do so...

    Thanks for the info Tom.

Just for documentation here are some other pump options:

    Pump APR uses: Jabsco

    Pump AMS uses: Varimax

I believe the Varimax (AMS one) flows the best.

I think if you just use it as a track option it makes sense. You can separate the wires at the track and get the advantage of the extra cooling. Before you leave plug it back in and functions as normal. Makes sense to me.

Has anyone done this with the AMS system installed? I am considering this mod with a switch in my dash.

Basically, the pump is now running on emergency mode ..
Is there anyway to disconnect it rather than cutting it?

Ahh ok I see.. That's pretty neat.

Sounds like a good option to disconnect while at the track and reconnecting once you're done.

Is there a separate pump for the supercharger and the rest of the engine or is it all one loop with one pump?

It would be good to solder a toggle switch into the circuit and hide it out of the way to engage it as and when required

oh lord.. so many choice haha!! have you done any research regarding these pumps as the one that is the quieter/flow more/durability/warranty/reputation of brand etc. ? I will need to have some read on the different system, seems like the awe/ams is pretty popular.

Supercharger loop has its own electrical pump. Main cooling system uses the primary water pump to circulate the coolant

Yellow/blue wire right? Lol just making sure I didn't cut the wrong wire, as these do go right with the ignition coils.

That's the one on my 2010 & the same on the 2014 diagram

    Easy enough to check.
Turn the steering on full lock to the right & undo the 2 screws that hold the left arch liner at the bottom & top to the bumper.Fold the liner out of the way & the pump is exposed :)

So do we know which one is on when, and is there a way to log these in VCDS? I assume the s/c one runs 100% all of the time?
