Pulling cam follower while engine is hot?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Is this okay to do/has anyone done it? It specifies in the manual to have the engine cold before pulling HPFP and I'm guessing its because of the expansion/contraction of the aluminum components. I've always personally done it with a cold/lukewarm engine but I'm going to be meeting up with a fellow forum member to help him pull his and I realized if we meet up somewhere then were gonna have to wait 2.5-4 hours for the thing to cool! So itll either be at his house or if its okay to do it while hot maybe we will do it that way (thatd really suck though)

So anyone done it while hot or are in agreement it should be cold when done?

    Thanks
    Eric

    Hi!!

I would not dream of having you sit around, that would not be right at all. I would drive to you but that would be the same issue.

The other possibility is that I drop the car off where we are meeting and leave it there, returning in mine later on to meet you so that it is cold.

We can chat later about this and thank you again!!

Haha, your welcome! Yes when I call you after work we can talk about it then! And I think this option would be best (drop it off and meet me there) I didn't think of asking if you had another car

Ps, sorry for the really long pm haha

Problem solved, thread can be deleted

Done mine few times 30-40 min after a drive. Not a big issue. As long as components are cool enough to the touch you ok. The main concern is the fuel coming out of the pump when you pull it off. Make sure you have plenty of rags to contain it. And make sure your exaust is not hot...

Yup, main concern is fuel dropping on hot exhaust components and igniting. Pull the LPFP fuse and run the motor until it dies to ensure the lines are all but dry and you’ll have no problem.

I just changed my follower for the 3rd or 4th time and when I took it around the block I noticed a slight leak. I immediately returned and pulled the hpfp off again. I did not pull the lpfp fuse, just bled the pressure on the schrader valve and pressed on. I had a couple rags on hand, but really didn't lose much fuel there.

Ok great to know! so its mostly a safety concern in burning yourself and or catching that car on fire then lol

The only reason you need to wait for the engine to be cool is b/c the engine gets really hot and you don't want to burn yourself and possibly set fire to your engine bay by leaking fuel on your hot engine AKA (igniter)= flames. If you know what your doing you can check it or change it hot. Have to be fast not to get burned.

Lol that's true, I've dont it after about two hours and the bits I was touching were still fckin hot as ever, these engines really hold the heat!

Honda civic I had would be ice cold in 30 minutes, that thing cooled down so fast I couldn't believe it!

Just wait a few hours till all pressure is bleed off and everything is cooled down. Just makes things easier, cooler, and cleaner to do.

The first time I did mine I drove to my friends house and immediately pulled it. Sure things where hot but whatever. My engine has always been somewhat warm/hot when I've done it. Wear gloves or something.

Agree with everyone else heats not an issue really as long as you pull the fuse and I'd loosen the bolts a little to let the fuel out. I doubt itd catch on fire. I would have a rag handy to handle the fuel pump and be careful of that hard coolant line running by those connectors.
