    Loud squeal/ squeak

    Morning guys,

Recently bought an 2005.5 A4 2.0T, manual trans with 170k miles. Love the car so far.

After i bought it i had it up on the hoist checking things out and noticed the front left cv boot was tore, grease all over the place. I have not replaced that yet. This morning on my way to work the car started squealing, pretty loud, constantly. It will go away if i ride the brakes, and it changes slightly depending which way i turn the wheel going down the road.

Is this that cv joint going out? Wheel bearing? This is my first Audi so i'm new to this. Thanks in advance for the help.

I had a sticky brake caliper slide that caused a very similar issue, so my guess is either that or the wheel bearing. A bad CV joint will usually make a clunking sound going around turns

It sounds like it is dealing with the brakes either needing to be replaced or the slides might need greasing, but the turning of the wheel also makes it sound like it could be a wheel bearing, if it is very speed dependent (the faster you go the louder the noise) I think that points more towards wheel bearing than brakes but because while applying the brakes it goes away, I'd probably take a look at those first (plus its easier)

As said, cv joint makes a sort of clicking noise, I drove for a year with a bad one on a civic and it never really reached a "clunking" point, the clicking just got louder and louder until it actually started pushing the steering wheel a bit because it couldn't smoothly rotate lol. I really didn't wanna fix it.

Thanks for replies guys! I'm thinking now that it is the caliper. Whether i was going 70 on the freeway or 5mph in the parking lot the noise was still there and about the same. Is it possible on this car to grease the pins or whatever it is that the caliper slides on? If not, i will just replace the caliper.

Ya if the noise was the same its not wheel bearing, wheel bearing is ALWAYS speed dependent and generally comes as more of a hum than a squeal at lower speeds.

All floating caliper style systems have grease able pins, just most people don't grease them when doing brakes as its an extra step. I'm not familiar enough to give any more advice past this as calipers can be different and I haven't owned the car long enough to do brakes yet (only two weeks!) but I'd bet if you look up a DIY of doing the brakes, you'll either find it as a step or will be able to see where/how it needs to be done.

The pins have a little rubber boot and are what connect the two sides of the caliper together (connects the frame to the piston) and is pretty easy to spot, they generally have rubber plugs in the end that you need to unbolt them from
