Looking to buy 2008 A6 with high miles

Found a 2008 A6 S line blue with Amaretto interior in great condition with 170k miles for $6,995. It doesnt have Nav "no navgation" on Nav screen. Car drove well when i test drove it, no accidents 2 owner. I know Audis can be expensive to repair but I can do the basics myself. Should I be weary with that mileage and is there anything that I should be looking for specifically? I didnt hear any rattle on start up. I feel like the price is decent for the condition of the car. Any advice or input will be appreciated as I may seeal the deal tomorrow.

I bought my '08 in April with 143,000 miles on it. As always, it depends on the car, and how it was maintained previously. Mine was really clean, and clearly looks to have been dealer maintained by the prior owner. I also have the amaretto interior, and it is a really nice looking interior. Everyone compliments it.

For comparison sake, mine is a 4.2 with nav, interior is like new (it's amazing, really), and it's in generally excellent condition, and I paid $9,800. Just make sure you can scan it for codes before you buy it. If you don't have VAGCOM you can get the Carista app and pick up a bluetooth ODB-II dongle.

Get service records if available or have a complete PPI (Pre-Purchase Inspection) done on the vehicle prior to purchase. High mileage C6's shouldnt be feared as long as they have been maintained properly. What motor is in the car?

Carbon buildup would be of a small concern if it has never been cleaned. There are plenty of forum members who have done it as a DIY so depending on how inclined you are, you can probably do it yourself for a minimal expense.

The achillies heel of the motor is the timing chains/tensioners/guides. As these motors are chain driving, Audi states they are "maintenance free" but nothing ever is; chains stretch, plastic guides degrade and become brittle, etc. When they fail, it generally results in a catastrophic engine failure (bent valves, busted pistons, etc).

When you started the car, did you here a rattle? Was the engine cold when you started it? The timing chains are sandwiched between the engine and transmission so it would sound like it is coming from the back of the motor. A slight rattle that lasts for a second or two is ok. Any prolonged rattling and I would walk away from the car and look for a different one.
