Help needed with NYS inspection & sequence of operations

Hello and good day fellow enthusiasts, about a week ago my wife and I picked up a new 2016 S3 in PA. We currently live on L.I. and i wanted to inquire on someone who has previous experience with purchasing a car out of state.

The vehicle currently has PA "vehicle in-transit" plates and i wanted to know if i can get my NYS inspection done now or do i have to wait until i have the NY plates and registration on the car? If i remember correctly when they do an NYS inspection they have to scan the registration barcode? So i'm assuming i need the reg and plates first?

Thank you for your time and support.

Yea in NY you always do the inspection after you register the car. I believe the DMV gives you 10 days to get the inspection done once the car has been registered.
I just moved up to CT and they make you do the inspection before they'll register your car. Plus side to that is NO window stickers making the front of the car look ugly :)

Just purchased my B8.5 A4 from PA around 2 months ago. Plates will arrive within 30 days. As soon as you get them, put them on, then go get your inspection done. It will be $10 since the car is less than 3 years old.

    Good luck.
