3.0 Coolant Temp

Did a quick search in the Q5 without results. Does anyone know what the normal coolant temp is 3.0 (SQ5)? I'm smelling something of a "hot temperature" smell coming through the AC vents occasionally. According to my P3 gauge, the coolant temp is 203°. Granted it's 98° here in Houston right now, but I haven't really paid attention to it until now to know if it's above normal.

If it were an LS motor, I'd know 195° is spot on. :-)

Check the top of your coolant reservoir. The line to my reservoir wasn't snapped all the way on from the dealer and I got that smell. It was an easy fix.

I'll check it. Ive had front clip off a few times. Maybe it's worked itself loose. I checked the coolant level today, and it's half way between min and max.

Also check if there is any residual of coolant spray, front driver side of the engine. Water pumps are known issues on the 3.0T's and can leak on the belt causing it to spatter..

If it's warmed up, A/C on, and 98F outside, I'm honestly surprised it's not higher than 203. Most modern engines will push into the 220s pretty regularly with any kind of load. With a 15/16psi pressurized system, boiling point isn't reached until well into the 250-60+ range ...not that those temps are going to be doing good things for power production and timing pull-back... Hope this helps

My Q5 3.0 P3 has always been around 203-204, the other day in Florida sitting in traffic dash temp was 102 with AC on P3 hit 210 coolant but once I started moving again it went back down to 203, seems normal.

I live in South Texas where it's 100+ daily and my temps hover around 203 according to P3 gauge.

It's not exactly delightful in DFW either.

Most modern Audi engines should be in the 80-90°C range. 200 seems spot on.

Nah, see. . .you have to go because there's something about your SQ that I want to check out, although for the life of me, I can't remember what it is.
