    some Downpipe work

    Hey guys,

so after talking to a friend who does good exhaust work, I am thinking of getting some exhaust work done.

first option is to get the precats removed and have the second set of O2 sensors relocated to behind the main cats.

    or

leave all O2 sensors as they are and remove the main cats.

I am really just looking to get a deeper exhaust tone and have a less restrictive exhaust system.

any info on either option and what would be the best way?

Are you currently running stock? If so id do piggies pipes and x pipe and then lock the valves open via golf tee or something similar.

You would (eventually) throw a code with either option I'm pretty sure, so plan on either tuning it out or having your guy do some 02 spacer trickery. Piggie piping will give you ~10% increase in volume without much change to the tone, maybe slightly "tinnier" and ever so slightly more bassy if that makes sense. Removing the main cats would make the car a shit ton louder and wouldn't sound all that refined on a stock exhaust setup imo. Neither option is the route I would take on the rs4 - i think it deserves a dedicated aftermarket exhaust or nothing at all.

Getting a full exhaust on this car was the funnest and most rewarding mod I've done - the motor makes some incredible sound when you let it loose but remains refined and exotic across the power band. Even just a catback is a better option because you won't have to worry about CEL codes and you'll get the added volume + desired tone (with some simple youtube research). Also, piggie piping just means your main cats will be under more stress down the line and will collapse earlier than they otherwise would have - happened to me first hand on my old s4.

hmmm. thats good to know. its strange though, so many people are saying that piggie piping is one of the best mods available on this car and that it frees up the engine in a really good way? I will eventually get a full exhaust (hopefully JHM) but even then i would wanna do something with my DPs. this just seems like a much better option then spending almost 4x as much on JHM downpipes

Full JHM with resonate and high-flow cats + vband test pipes for easy swap.... best mod ever (besides a supercharger!)... $3850 best money spent!

I have piggies and I continually get asked what aftermarket exhaust setup I run. It really opens up the exhaust and sounds great. the exhaust burbles more but is still pretty quiet at lower RPMs. O2 Spacers were needed on mine, but I didn't relocate the sensors holes and I am not tuned (although I need to replace two of my sensors that were seemingly harmed during the process as the passenger side pipe is throwing codes while the drivers side is not complaining at all).

Like you mentioned, I did mine after reading about all the folks that are saying that is one of the best initial options - and I don't regret it at all. JHM even offers a nice service of gutting the precat along with the relocation of the sensor. I say go for it.

I had the big rear resonator deleted, and two mandrel bent SS straight pipes welded in place. They did a fantastic job, and it really "woke up" the car. Got a significant bump in volume (imagine pressing the S button like 3 more times), and some nice burble/backpressure sounds that I love.

quattro GmbH made a masterful OEM exhaust for our RS4's. If you look at the system underneath it is absolutely gorgeous. I would not hack up the DPs or cats. Either do a resonator delete for more volume/grumble, or purhcase/install some JHM gutted Piggies - or both!!! I can't afford another $3000+ on exhaust right now, so this was a fantastic option for me. Holler!!

    '06 A4 3.2L S-Line // Rare Blk/Blk/Blk 6spd, Alum Trim, Nav/BT (amazing car)
    '03 A4 1.8t // Blk/Blk 6spd (even w mods, didn't love 4 cylinders)
    '98 A4 2.8L // Blk/Blk 5spd (heavily modded, won some shows)
    '96 A4 2.8L // Pearl Wht/Blk 5spd (first love, Quattro for life)

but arent JHM piggies exactly the same thing as "hacking up the DPs" ? they simply hollow out the precats and relocate the O2 sensors? the cost for this mod through JHM is about $400 and about $100 for shipping to Canada (where i am) I have a chance to get this done locally for about $200

Did you find a local shop to do it for you? $200 isnt so bad at all. Im also in canada and have the same duties and shipping issue as you.

yes i did! the car has an appointment booked tomorrow and I have to decide whether i want to take the main cats out or the precats. This is a city reknown exhaust fabricator so the work should be good!

Yea i just cant justify paying almost $700 CAD for JHM piggies when its about 1/4th of the price to get it done here locally

Do the pre-cats. Where are you having it done?
