Questions for the stand alone ecu guys

For guys running a stand alone ems, which ems are you running? I am about to pull the trigger on the AEM infinity 506 but I am curious as to what everyone else is running.

I've been running a Haltech Elite 1500 for the last couple months and it's well worth the price. I looked into the infinity, but ended up with haltech mainly due to liking their ESP software better than Infinity tuner. Also Haltech has online chat support which I have used countless times for instant answers to questions I had. If going Haltech, plan on buying the WB1 wideband setup as it's the proper way to utilize their fuel system self learning due to the fact it runs on the CAN network. That's my 2 cents.

Are you running it on an A4? Im just guessing because I believe the 1500 only has 4 ignition and fuel injection outputs. What problems did you encounter by ditching the stock ECU since it controls so much more than the standalone? I am actually considering running them in parallel but I want to see what others are doing first.

Yeah I'm running the Elite 1500 on the 1.8t, you would want the 2500 for the 2.7t but install and configuration would be essentially the same. I used a stock engine wiring harness for my car and spliced the Haltech connectors onto it one wire at a time. This took most of my time, just verifying each wire and the configuration in the ESP software, a good wiring diagram is key here. Other then that, you just need to configure the gauge output correctly, like tach, speedo, coolant temp, etc. ABS on my car only had one input into the factory ecu (Rough road input), so it was unaffected by the Haltech. I don't have traction control but the ecu has the ability to do it. Main reason I went Elite 1500 was the ability to do DBW, so I swapped to a S4 throttle and pedal assembly. Calibration of the DBW system is very straight forward, and idle control with the DBW rocks. I would say ditch the factory ECU all together, the Haltech can do anything you want, you just have to figure out how to set it up. Not to mention, it mounts in the factory ECU box perfectly!

I am setting up a Megasquirt ms3 pro with custom harness, only problem with this platform and that standalone is that you need to get a drive by cable conversion.

I was originally going to go with MS3x but I didn't want to do the drive by cable conversion. I also liked some of the tubing features AEM had to offer!

Curious to hear if there is any good insight on this as well. I am currently stuck between the ProEFI 128 and an AEM Infinity.

I'll be pulling the trigger on one here shortly when I go back to school. One of my friends over there is an amazing tuner and knows his way around standalones pretty well so he will be showing me the ropes (he has an MS Miata with a variable geometry turbo). I plan on making a DIY because there's a huge lack of information on converting to stand alone for this platform. Let's be honest too... Speed density is much easier to deal with than me7.

AEM 506 should be perfect for the 2.7T... not only that you won't have to worry about driving the tach, etc since you can send all that info via the CAN-BUS, and get info like the 4 wheel speed sensors, etc.

I was waiting for you to chime in Notoriousvr. I've been around a while and I know you're a big fan of standalones haha.

The 506 only has 2 wheel traction control.

708 is the first model that supports 4 wheel traction control, not to mention it has 4 stage nitrous control. A must for every S4 owner. Hmm

My s4 doesn't even have traction control so I can live without it 😂 . I ran nitrous before and unfortunately besides spool it didn't help that much. The amount of gain wasn't enough to justify keeping it. A bigger turbo setup would benefit from it for sure tho!

I was joking about the nitrous.

I'd also like to hear more about results with SA. I have experience on a few, AEM being the only mainstream one, but nothing on a VAG product.

I'm still kind of surprised/baffled that no one has released a comprehensive front end program for ME7.

And, has anyone set up a slave ECU or emulator to pass a plug-in state emission test?

That has nothing to do with what I said though. You can still monitor all for wheel speed sensors via CAN BUS on the 506.

oh, I understood that part. The new Standalones can use traction control to dial in launch control. For that reason I was recommending that the 708 might be a better match. It wasn't an absolute statement and certainly open to feedback.

If you're reading all 4 wheel speed sensors via CAN BUS there is no difference in traction control use. The 506 is limited to 2 frequency based inputs vs the 4 on the larger 7 series ecus, that's all. The strategy doesn't change from what I can see.
