who has changed their MT gear oil?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    which fluid did you use?

Im on the fence between redline or OEM. I've heard that redline fluid wears our quickly. These MTs need GL-4 right?

Motul gear 300. Have used redline and it's good, but when I had it in the tranny during the winter it was very hard to put it in reverse.

I did it at my 35k service. Redline. I've heard nothing but good things about the product.

I would recommend using oem fluids...what's the benefit going to be using a different fluid than oem? Nothing. If it's not broke, don't fix it.

this is not true. changing fluids makes a very noticeable difference, immediately you will notice (at least with motul 300) that your gearbox feels....idk, thicker almost? I would describe it as if it's a syrup-like viscosity where before you had something that felt more like olive oil.

it's a pleasant change and you also notice the transmission appears to feel refreshed, and smoother all around.

    couple items of note:
    - if you do it at home, get some cardboard and well ventilated area, gear oil stinks worse than your momma's hoo-hah after bikram yoga
    - get a pump, there is not much room to gravity-feed your oil into the feel area
    - if you live where it gets freezing, you will experience during times of cold that your transmission feels very thick, when it warms up it will go back to normal.
    - Lastly, audi says gear oil is a lifetime fluid, personally I don't buy it, when I swapped mine on my b7 a4 at 35k it looked tired and I was really glad I changed the oil. If anything I would advise flushing every 40k just to get that warm fuzzy new gear oil feeling.

I am curious if you have the sport diff, that's something I know little about and would have just assumed audi uses some propitiatory unicorn-tear oil where if you used regular fluid it would break the diff.

Yeah the sport diff has two halves. One half (passenger-side) is standard diff oil and the other half is magic unicorn blood that I'll never touch.

We did mine when we were debating on swapping out the center differential while installing the new clutch. We used OEM fluid.

As it turns out, the b8.5 has a fancy new welded up center differential, who knew?

What do you mean "welded-up" ??
They changed from a Torsen center diff to an Audi design "Crown Gear" diff for the B8.5.

The benefit of not using oem fluid is not paying $130 for oil

Correct. To date, it's not possible to swap out this component with something else to obtain more rear bias (similar to an older Torsen).

We use Motul Gear 300 here in most applications.

Gear fluid is different, it can smell normal and look new, but ts viscosity level changes and its lubrication properties decrease. Fresh fluid every 40k is a solid recommendation.

How does one decide which motul product to use in the manual trans and in the sport diff?

motul seems to make multiple products that could work (fluids are one thing that always confuse me for some reason)?

    GEAR 300 LS 75W90

i think we need to specifically use GL-4 and not GL-5 fluid in these transmissions iirc

Changed mine out today with Pentosin MT2 (GL-4) fluid. Never really gets cold here and I've heard good things about the Pentosin... we'll see. I'm 4 years in and about 34,000 miles with 3 track weekends... Oil did not look to be in very bad shape at all... still smelled bad though.

Did everyone else have to take off the drivetrain stabilizer? I have the Eurocode AK, and there was zero room to get a tool in there to take off the drain plug. Looking at the OEM brace - it is very similar - a little more room due to it being thinner, but I still don't think I'd have been able to get the plug off with the stock stabilizer in place.

Got about 3.8l out, and just about exactly the same amount went back in... Manual states the "initial fill" is 4.2l - so I guess .4l of stuff was left in the trans? Thought the car was pretty level...

Looked at doing the Sport diff, but figured I'd wait a bit and try to get fluids for both halves instead of just Motul Gear 300 for the diff side...
