Vinyl wrapped grill and window trim

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys, had my grill and window trim wrapped today in flat black. Came out great and personally I think the grill looks better this way than an RS grill on a black car.

If anybody is thinking of doing the same and wants a few more pics let me know and I'll be glad to post them up.

Solar Tint in Miami. I would highly recommend them if you're in the area. It's a good and inexpensive mod. Looks sportier IMO. The chrome looks good as well, but it's got more of a luxury look

does the OP want an honest opinion or what he wants to hear?
Honest opinion - without the grills blacked out or atleast have the chrome gone, it looks off with just the widow trims wrapped. And I would of gone with gloss black to retain the OEM + look and not look like its been plasti dipped. I personally like the silver RS4 grill on the black S4's.

Not so honest - wow, looks great!

Yea I may switch to gloss black later on, especially for the window trim. I do like the brushed silver lines across the grill and surrounding chrome as is though. Never liked the full on black out look

Yea silver RS grill looks solid, but I definitely prefer this

Thanks for both your honest and not so honest opinions

I saw that comment on another thread of a guy that did the same thing lol. I think that's not a great distinction between the A4 and S4 as you can get a black optics package that eliminates the chrome on the S4..so pretty much the same thing lol

Actually not my lawn haha I normally park in my garage. My girlfriend just happened to get in an accident and so went straight from picking up my car to where she was and snapped the pics while she was talking to the cops. Thankfully minimal damage to her car and nobody got hurt

I think the black looks significantly better than the awkward grey that doesn't match anything else on the car

I was with Danny when I first read/saw the pic in your first post, but since you put up the last one of it stock, I completely agree with you and think it looks way cleaner! I didn't like the flat black trim when I did one side of my car with plasti dip, but I think gloss for the trim would look perfect brotha.

I agree it does look much better, but it doesn't change it drastically like blacking out the entire grille would. It's also an easy DIY for even the biggest amateurs so I feel like the shop shoulda thrown it in with the window wrap.

A4 gets matte black trim while black optics S4 gets the gloss black version.

Yea seeing the stock one helps to understand the change, and it is an improvement, but when I read the thread title I was expecting a blacked grille and got disappointed lol.

For example, I just blacked out the grille on our new Q5:

    Went from this:

    To this:

Closeup of keeping the factory gloss black in there. Total PITA to tape off.

I could've done the vinyl on the grill easily myself, but the guy did it with the window trim for $10.

Didn't know the A4 and S4 got different colors. I may be changing to gloss anyways for the window trim, I think it look much better.

$10 isn't bad at all. You'd probably pay that just for the vinyl alone.

I agree gloss pops much better. Car looks good overall. Keep up the modding!

I like the gray bars on grill wrapped black. It's one of those subtle things that not everyone will notice but still improves on stock look. Now about your general priorities: girlfriend gets in car accident, OP arrives at scene and snaps photos of his own car for AZ post...gotta love it!

Yep, a few people that see my car regularly didn't even notice until it was pointed out, but they agree it makes a nice difference.

And hey at least she was ok with it and liked how it came out lol!

I agree that the gray slats on the standard grill (and rear valence) make no sense at all as they match nothing else on the S4.
I've been thinking of doing these cosmetic changes and bought a large roll of gloss black vinyl.
After contacting a few local installers, they said that the vinyl won't last long- a year maybe?
So I have been considering having everything painted gloss black.
OP, were you told how long this vinyl should keep looking good?

They didn't tell me how long, but I imagine the window trim will last quite some time if its done well. The grill might have a shorter lifespan, but it's easy to fix if it comes off. I thought about using plastidip too, but figured if I ended up not liking the look of the vinyl I could revert back to the original look easily. Now that I know I like it I'm considering using plastidip once it starts to peel or fade. I'm sure there's also detailing products out there for the upkeep of vinyl.

On my 2010 Camaro SS I had vinyl on the Chevy bow tie emblem in front and it lasted about 6 months (take into consideration I didn't have any experience with applying vinyl so I'm sure the application wasn't the best). After that I had it painted, which looked great, but I'm guessing the shop didn't do proper post paint work and ended up with tons of chips on it. Finally did plastidip and that held up the longest. If you want to paint everything gloss black you may want to look into using black plastidip and applying plastidip glossifier. It's cheaper than paint so if anything needs to be touched up it won't cost much. Think it generally runs about $10 a can if I recall correctly.

Truth is though if any of three of those options are done properly they should last a while. The place I get my tint/vinyl work done at does quality work so I'm hoping it lasts more than a year
