Anyone ever have to ad coolant?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My car is never super low but a few times i've opened the hood and the coolant is a hair below the min line....

wondering if this is normal. I see no leaks...but once in a while on a hot day i'll smell a faint coolant smell from the engine bay...

I can't imagine the car is pushing coolant but who knows.....

    Thoughts?

do you have an aftermarket coolant system?
the only issues I have had was from aftermarket rubber cut offs instead of using a silicone base

That's not normal, I think you need to give me a ride so I can test out your EPL Stage 2 file ... for science of course

Once or twice a year I will top off the coolant reservoir with Audi coolant. Probably have a small leak somewhere, though I don't see anything. Unless you are topping off the coolant reservoir monthly or more, I would not worry about it if there are no obvious signs of a leak

This spring I noticed mine was closer to the min than the max line, so I bought a quart of coolant to top it off, but when I went to add it, it was back up to the max line, so I didn't bother. It hasn't been low since, strange.
So level must fluctuate slightly due to expansion and cycling of coolant through the system?

This. I had to add some to mine after a few years and had my shop actual test my system and they found no leaks. Also keep in mind when your car has been running the fluid level will rise towards teh max line. When the car has been sitting it'll be towards the min line. If you add coolant only fill it midway between the min and max lines when the car is cool.

I used to have to add a few ounces every few months. This has always been the case since Audi replaced my tstat and waterpump. When my crank pulley failed I had an independent shop install my JHM pulley and they didn't push one of the coolant pipes in all the way and it quickly let go. When they put the pipe back into place I haven't lost coolant ever since.

Have dealer Check it out. I had similar issue and found I had a very minor leak under the super charger. Engine was so hot that it evaporated the coolant before it ever leaked anywhere. Would have never known if I didn't open the hood and do my own oil change.

It is normal for the level to fluctuate somewhat with the temperature.

Mine fluctuates from the mid line to just below the full line.

I had a leak under the SC as well - for 3 years it was minor enough that I mentioned it at every service, but they pressure tested, etc and found no leaks. I just kept adding coolant...

Then it finally got bad enough in Nov/Dec last year that I started noticing coolant puddles on the undertray, and occasionally would get some belt squealing on startup. Coolant was running out off the top of the engine under braking after pooling there. They SA said they found a lot of dried up coolant on the top of the engine.

They replaced the thermostat and one small pipe/hose and some seals. It was better good for about 5 months, but then the coolant level started back down... Right now the level is below min when cold again, so I'm taking it back in Tues before my warranty is up.

Ive had 3 B8 S4s and they all lost a little coolant from time to time. And the level will vary based on temps. What I did was fill the coolant between MIN and MAX. Then I put a piece of tape on the reservoir level with the coolant level. I check it every so often . As long as it doesn't go below the MIN level , I don't worry. Now if you are constantly losing fluid, I would worry about the water pump.
