    True confessions of S4 owners

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I saw this on the F80 forums and thought it was funny to hear the wacky shit people do/say or feel about their car.

I have never once launched my car hard. Not joking, I just can't bring myself to do it.

I've never turned TC fully off.

I got way too cocky when I first drove in the snow, slid out going about 25 MPH and slid right into a snowbank. No damage but I puckered up good.

I think Audi should have injected more sport into this platform. In stock form frankly, it lacks feel, character and personality.

Before I put some mods on it, I actually was thinking about selling it as I really wasn't enjoying it as much as I thought i would.

I wish the car was turbo as I am not happy with the power limits of the SC.

I've only had one stranger say, hey nice car to me and it was a freaking cop at a random checkpoint. I hear people say they get compliments all the time and think they are making this up.

I'm getting a little bored of the car, and am very close to jumping ship to an F80 M3.

So, what are your honest confessions about your S4?

I posted my 16' for sale at 2500 miles for this very reason. This forum convinced me to keep it and mod it. I'm 100% in love now.

I turned the TC off at a stoplight in the rain. Turned right and floored it, thinking I would drift gracefully around the corner and take off. Spun it and ended up in the grass in front of a bunch of cars. Felt embarrassed.

I was too cocky with my 1st S4 and almost slid into a guardrail in the snow about a month after I bought it.

I've launched my new S4 twice. Once to see it if it worked right after I drove it home and the other when my best friend was in the car. Not worth the stress on the tranny unless you have a GOOD reason (IE showing off to a girl, etc)

I rarely drive my S4 cause it breaks my heart to see it go up in miles.

And when I drive by people walking on the streets or am on busy streets I make the SC whine just to see people look to see what that weird sound is... Lol

And I purposely park next to other Audi's/German cars

Lol, I just put 6,300 plus miles on mine in a single road trip and while a minor issue arose, I would not have enjoyed the drive in a rental. I also did the Tail of the Dragon 3 times

Great road trip car. Not very sporty. I HATE all the creaking and squeaking plastics ... Esp in this tx heat. Doesn't happen when it's cool.

Hmmm lets give this a go.

    I bought a Pre-owned Stage 1 S4 FWIW.

First night I bought it I took it ~160MPH to see if it had a governor on it. (it doesn't)
Within the first two weeks of owning it I curbed a rim
Within the first two months of owning it I got a speeding ticket
I get compliments on it at least once a week
    Currently I can run with F80 M3s
I pull on them down low
    They pull up high
This issue will be addressed when I go Stage 2+
I love the SC and how it turns heads when it spins up (It is a pretty specific sound)

The car stock left a lot to be desired, I had full plans of going at least stage 2 before I even bought it.

Love the car and currently wouldn't trade it for anything else on the road.

Best car on the market for its price range. I can't find any car even under 100k similarly optioned that I would give this up for. Many may think I'm crazy but I love my '12 and keeping it literally till it blows up or begins to cost too much in repairs, which I expect to be a long time from now

I agree with this lol. The car looks like an A4 unless you did aftermarket exterior mods to it.

Had a 13' S4, I did not enjoy the electronic steering. I modded the car with all suspension goodies (front/rear sways + endlinks, pss10, front tower strut, alu kreuz) and it still sucks due to the electronic steering. Only thing I enjoyed about the car was the instant torque when I went stage 2+. Other than that, I sold the car and got a 12' C63 AMG with P31 package. A much more enjoyable car but not in rain or snow. lol

Love everything about the new M3, except the exhaust. I am sure I wouldn't like the steering much either on it, just since I haven't found a good electric steering unit that I really like.

As far as cars under $100k that are better than this, I would say none new, but some used ones. Of course I am saying as an overall package. Much better sports cars than this for under $100k, and much better luxury cars than this for under $100k.

    1. When I first bought my car I first wasn't too sure on its color, then I hated it, and now I'm loving it.

    2. First heavy snow we had I went a little too powerslide crazy and "wall-tapped" a big rock. I almost cried having the car for less than a month before opening the door and seeing absolutely zero damage. (small road rash on the rim)

    3. Having used LC multiple times, I am convinced my car is faster than a GTR.

    4. I want an F80 M3 badly. Still way too early into my car to think about the next, and I still love my S4. A couple years down the road however, I will be getting one.

In an Auto-X, I posted a better time in my S4 than a friend in his Porsche Cayman and I was on all season tires he was on much better tires. During the event he asked how that fancy Dif "Sport Dif" was working for me. He went all rogue after the event with aftermarket suspension to improve the Porsche.

I am right with you on these three. Coming from a BMW 335 that was highly modified I'm considering going back, but to an F80 M3 this time...toying with the idea of listing my 2013 S4 for sale very soon.

How are you not happy with the power limits, and you never once launched the car hard? Have you ever floored it in dynamic mode and actually let it rev out? I think a lot of people who are bore by this car just don't know how to drive it. A lot of my motorcycle riding buds think they are ready or need a bigger displacement bike, but turns out they just never even pushed their current machine; short shifting and not even letting the engine get into it's power band. Also, I'd bet 90% of people who get an F80 M3 never use even 50% of it's potential. You can mod these S4's to trap almost 120 in the 1/4 with just bolt on's. That very respectable performance.

Nice thread, I'll confess my sins lol

I came from the bmw world, had a 135i and then a n55 335i all modded of course. So much fun and I fell in love with turbos. After 5 1/2 years and essentially the same motor I decided to make a change to a different platform, the B8.5 s4. The car was so conservative to me coming from bmw, exhaust was super quiet and the suspension rode smoother. I was like, what the F did I do but I knew with the mods I was planning it should be a fun car. After intake, stage 1 and exhaust I was still thinking damn my bimmer was so fun. It sounded so good and I could have taken it further (turbo upgrade)

Fast forward a few months with the ordering of more performance parts and I am super happy with the outcome. Suspension, wheels, grill, stage 2 (soon to go dual pulley), short shifter. So much more fun to drive, the car definitely needed stage 2 low end power. I also get a lot of heads turned and compliments. With all the advancements in power lately I may not need that m3 yet.

    I'll bite.

Always been an auto enthusiast. I love cars, trucks, Jeeps and bikes. I don't discriminate.

When I got home from basic and AIT in August 2013, I leased a 2013 M3 competition edition. My dream car. At that time I was daily driving a 2004 Silverado 2500HD 6.0 gasser. Loved that truck and I loved the M3.

After a year into the lease of the M3, I just couldn't get over the idea that I was really just "renting" the car and I ended up having someone assume the lease. Big mistake. That car had an effect on me that to this day I still can't shake. I ended up selling my 2004 (another mistake) and purchased a 2015 Fully loaded 2015 Silverado Duramax diesel (another huge mistake). The 2015 Silverado was a lemon and got GM to buy it back. The second 2015 was just as bad and I got rid of it a year later. Bought (not leased) my 2016 S4 in December and have been decently happy with the car. The F80 M3 was just out of my price range.

At first, I was seriously disappointed with the engine note but the intake has helped. Down the road I'll get an exhaust. It's just too damn quiet.

The car didn't feel very tight and refined like my M3. It is getting better with the CR-15, Euro Code AK, 034 tranny insert, and ECS drivetrain inserts. Bilstein coil overs are In my future as well as a 034 rear sway bar.

I have not launched the car using launch control, but I am always surprised just getting on it from a stop. This car needs some serious help at the top end. Maybe in a few years after the warranty expires, I'll get it tuned. Still, there's no other feeling hearing a V8 scream past 8,000 RPM.

The DSG is nice but it shifts too damn slow. TCU tune will help I'm sure.

The interior is up to snuff, but my only gripe is the large plastic instrument cluster bezel. It has creaked and rattled after a few weeks of ownership. The radio helps with it. Eventually I want to change this over to the piano black unit.

The car is fun and it nice being able to do the mods on it. I'm also glad that I am able to change the oil using readily available Mobile 1 0w-40 versus Castrol TWS 10w-60.

I haven't been truly happy with a car since I sold my Volvo 850R several years ago, after owning it for a decade. I drifted around, sampling a VW Jetta TDI for 4 years (liked it ok, but slooooow), then due to a back injury spent a couple of years in small SUVs (urgh). When my back got better, I was getting the itch for something fun again. I looked at Volvo's offerings, but honestly the styling just didn't do it for me like their older designs.

So, I kept researching, looking at so many cars my wife was ready to shoot me. I had just about settled on a Mazda 6, then one day I decided to check prices on used S4s, and suddenly I was happy again. For little more than a decked out boring mid-size snoozemobile, I could have an S4! Amazingly, I found two 6MT S4s within 10 miles of my house, and within a day one of them was in my driveway.

Unlike others here, I'm blissfully happy with the power level. Who wouldn't be, coming from an SUV? LOL I do wish it made a bit more noise, and to that end I'm installing an 034 intake tube and K&N this weekend. Sometime in the fall I'll do the x-pipe / resonator delete. Other than that, I'm just loving being back in a nice euro sedan again.

Oh, and for the "confessions" bit, I will admit to trying to defy the laws of physics within days of ownership, on a just-misted damp road pulling out of a parking lot. Even with Quattro grip, there are some limits you cannot exceed. Luckily I gathered it up quickly, but not before the wife said "HELLO? Wet! Dumbass."

Will bump this old thread to make 2 confessions (1 more superstitious than the other):

    1. Have owned my B8.5 for a little under a year now and I have yet to see the low-fuel indicator, if I approach the last quarter, Im filling up.
    2. Every fill-up must end in the 3. $30.43, $28.93, etc...

    I feel better now...

...and yes my wife thinks I'm crazy.

I'm 66yrs old. And although it would be nice to have more power, there are rarely situations on the street that the power of this car can be fully used. This is my 3rd B8/B8.5 S4. ALL 6MTs. I still love driving it as much as when I got my first one in 2010. I let my dogs ride in the car all the time, but only with towels covering the seats. Will probably keep this one for a while because I can't find anything I want or like better for the price. It is definitely the best car that I have ever owned. I wish my current one was red like my first 2. But Phantom Black is OK.

Had my B8 for almost 3 weeks. It replaced my aging, maintenance sucking E46 M3. The day I bought it I drove 3 hours to get it. On the drive back between traffic and rain it took me 7 hours to get home. The seats in the M3 were WAY more comfortable than the S4. I can't get 100% comfortable in the S4.

I was ready to go all out with exhaust, stage 2+, coilovers, etc. Enjoying the car as is. Maybe stage 1. Guessing I'm getting old.

Oh yeah. Tried LC once. It was awesome but afraid to do it again.

I know people might give you bad comments because of this so I will help by saying that you are not alone. I try to avoid using my car as much as possible in order to 1) keep it in good shape and 2) keep the low mileage for a better resale value. I use it in the rain only if I absolutely have to. I'll most likely use my beater this winter I would kind of compare it to being a Ferrari owner, only much MUCH poorer
On the plus side I think it helps me appreciate the car more everytime I drive it; at this rate I'll never get tired!

For me this type of car is something that you buy, customize to your liking, wash often and track once in a while.

I never opened my doors when treating the rubber seals. Ended up always doing it while closed, and having to rub all of the treatment off of the trim and paint

I'm glad dual pulley just came in, along with EPL, because at this I felt like this platform was kinda boring.. after 10 mods, the car was ''maxed''. No offense, but I don't understand people who put in their sig their tint or badgeless as a ''mod''. Goes to show that it wasn't really a ''tuning platform''. Now, with APR ultracharger, 2 new tuner from EPL and 034, dual pulley, I think the excitement is there for a few more years, at least.

I came from a long line of high horsepower B5 S4's, the B5 guys always made fun of this platform because of its no feel steering and ride and the slow rise in performance options. When I was finally done playing with B5's I had to make a choice and I was going between a B7 RS4 or the B8 S4. The RS4 had the more raw driving feel that I was used to but power was very disappointing so a supercharger would need to be added if I went that route and my pockets just weren't deep enough. I settle for a pretty well sorted '11 S4 and added larger crank pulley and CW to up the power. The suspension the past owner had on it felt good but turn in just didn't give me a sure feeling for track use so I added an 034 RSB. It helped a lot and so far I am really enjoying the car as a daily driver and will be tracking it this coming spring to see how it behaves. Power still isn't what I'm used to but its not bad and no turbo lag is nice for a change. I plan to push the car as more info and mods come out, I think with larger injectors and either some turbo's tucked in or a better flowing SC the car could get into the 600hp range and be a solid performer. We will see...

It brings a smile to my face when the valet parks my S4 next to the entrance with the Cadillacs, MBs, BMWs, Porsche's and Teslas. Before I'd get put in the puddles with the Fords, Toyotas, Scions and Saturns.

I've activated LC once... Almost put me in the back seat! I'll save that trick for when its really necessary, it's got to break something if you do it often.

After over a year of ownership, I still look at my S4 and say, "I can't believe I'm driving an Audi S4."

After showing off what my S4 mods can do. My GF is terrified of driving my car... Secretly, I'm kind of relieved.

I confess, after spending thousands of $$ on mods, my S4 still looks OEM to the untrained eye... How can that be?!?!

I don't agree with the comparison of the S4 to cars like Ferraris with low production numbers. There have been a TON of B8/B8.5s produced over the years, not to mention servicing isn't that complex (engine-out services every 10k-15k on certain exotics), so mileage doesn't really affect the value. The only ones that come close to what you described have an R before the model name.

Granted, the more you drive, the more chance of damage (though stone chips can be avoided by clear bras, and you have insurance for the bigger stuff). Is it worth a few thousand dollars on the back end to not enjoy driving your car while YOU own it? Heck, some of the most fun a lot of us have with the car is in the snow and rain. QUATTRO FTW (with the correct tires).

Here's some numbers for you from the same general area (I chose the midwest).

    64.5k Mile 2011 - $27,000 http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...32518728&Log=0

    89k Mile 2011 - $24,000 http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...39224092&Log=0

To each their own though. Now that I typed this I want to go take a ride

I have done well over 10 dry surface AWD donuts.

I have hit 180 mph tack speed late at night on the parkway. Stupid, but had to get it off my bucket list.

The motor blew at 102,000 miles, Audi replaced it for free.

Drive it like i stole it.

I have 3 tail of the dragon trips under my belt.

I daily this car 30,000 miles a year.

    I love this car.
