    Diagnose My Audi Please!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So i bought this Audi a few weeks back and i brought it home and noticed that the oil was black as crap so i thought NBD ill just change the oil. So i changed it out and put a new filter in and when i when to start it up this loud rattling noise started to occur. Ive tried different shops and forums and nothing that i can perfectly pin point. Im thinking timing chain or bad oil pump maybe even both I just want a few opinions on the car so i can narrow this down and get this crap fixed. Let me know what you guys think please !

You need a stethoscope. But sure sounds like that timing chain is about to fly apart. I can damn near hear it from here in Eden Prairie.

Holy crap. Stop driving it! If it's loudest back there, you need to get that cam chain cover off and look at it. Sounds like it's stretched so far or the tensioner is so shot that it's rattling against everything in there and you don't want it to jump teeth.

    Cam chain tensioner?

    http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ioner-DIY-2-0t

This drives me nuts that people use these terms interchangeably, the back is the cam chain, the front ins the timing belt. Creates confusion, especially for people ordering parts.

The rear cam chain tensioner is activated by oil pressure. When I first started my brand new motor, even after priming it as suggested, the rattle lasted a few minutes until enough pressure built up. So it could be that but it should resolve after a few minutes at max.
So far the only variable you changed is oil and filter.
    Which oil did you use?
    What filter?

The sound sounds just like the rear cam chain is slapping due to a fault in the tensioner. There have been reports of the tensioner wearing through the plastic guide but that is not a common failure. Check for any codes and if you feel comfortable with it, remove the rear cam cover and inspect. It is very tight space back by the firewall but you should be able to inspect the chain and tensioner once off. However, replacing the tensioner is a real PITA as you have the choice between removing the entire cam girdle plate and reseal vs trying to removed the ridiculously torqued cam adjuster bolt. You will need a cam locking tool, and a new gasket for the rear cover at a minimum. If removing the girdle plate, you will need some new green special OEM sealent and new girdle bolts as they are one time use.

Maybe you can boroscope through the HPFP hole first before removal?

You can get a cheap camera off and app called WISH, it will fit down there, cost like $ 10 but the only problem is it takes a month to get here. Its nice though and has built in LEDs. 3mm or so.

Does anyone know of the cost to get this repaired on my audi. I just don't trust myself working on these types of projects on my car
