    OEM Cam Chain Tensioner buy

It's about that time...I know aftermarket is no good but I believe ECS, blauparts & Europarts all have an option for OEM. If you were looking for the kit that includes seals, gaskets & etc would the blauparts option be a good choice for $260 for oem parts. But on FCP its $250 for just the tensioner?? Trying to find the best economical way to get everything

From all that I've read, it's OEM or nothing for this piece.
That said, you may also be able to replace just the pads and perhaps the chain itself if you are just trying to cure the rattle. If the cam chain adjuster has truly failed, then this won't work, obviously.

judging by the pricing it seems as though you are looking at aftermarket tensioners. the OEM one is over $800. ECS has it on sale right now for $657 though.

I got an OEM manufacturer one from europaparts I think.

Same company that makes the audi oem ones. So we shall see how it holds up.

Old Guy has a thread about that tensioner - it failed prematurely.

What are the failure rates though? And why would it be any different than the OEM one ? If it's the same company making it .

I'm with Furly. I'd exhaust every option plausible before I pay $650 bucks.

I thought the word was the europaparts had good tensioners. the reviews on the site for the tensioner back that up as well. its the revised k tensioner. Built by same supplier as the Audi logo'd ones.

and on top of this, what fails on the tensioner system is usually A) the pads, or B) the chain itself. the pads get worn down causing the chain to rattle around, or the chain begins to gain slack and that is also what causes a rattle. The way to check is to see if the pads themselves have grooves. if they do...probly pads. if underside of valve cover has a groove...probably slack in the chain. so I would just check. maybe you don't need to change the whole tensioner out. maybe you do but I think the europaparts tensioner is up to par if you do have to change the whole unit out. cool part is they also sell the chain ;)

    cheers.

I have no desire to badmouth any product from a quality supplier. My intent is to simply state my experience with CCT's.

Somewhere around 190K miles my engine developed a nasty noise. At that time I replaced my OEM CCT with the one to which you are referring. Prior to that time I had no codes or performance issues relating to the CCT. The noise ended up being the water pump. The pads on my OEM CCT showed signs of wear but were still intact.

After about three months I began to get cam position codes (P0011/P0012). I had never had any cam related codes in the previous 190K+ miles. I contacted the supplier and they graciously replaced the CCT. Along with the new CCT I also decided to replace the cam chain and the cam position sensor.

When I received the new chain I compared it to the old chain. I checked the chain length with a jack screw. There was no measurable length difference between the new chain and the old chain. I checked the chain sag. Again, no measurable difference. I checked the chain link diameters with precision micrometers. Again, no measurable difference. The OEM chain with 190K+ miles was essentially as good as the replacement.

I also checked the oil pressure to make sure I didn't have an issue with low oil pressure. My oil pressure was excellent. Well within the specs for a new engine.

I replaced the CCT with the new CCT along with the chain and position sensor. Once again after about three months I began to get cam position codes. At this point I contacted the supplier. I returned the second CCT and received store credit for my purchase. I then replaced the worn pads on my OEM CCT and reinstalled it. It has now been ~ 35K miles since I put the original CCT with new pads back in place and to date I have had no issues whatsoever.

I had spoken at length with the supplier when I was going through these issues. At that time they had sold several hundred of the same CCT that I had purchased with no other complaints. I guess it's possible that I just happened to get two defective CCT's. Who knows? When I posted my experience in this thread it was apparent that many others have had issues with CCT's other than OEM. You can draw your own conclusions. Clicky clickŪ

Also, its the electrical solenoid which often goes bad. I swapped a good solenoid out and it fix mine.
