    RNS-E and iPhone

    Good day folks -

I've done a little searching around and came up on some old threads. Is this Dension option still the best option out there to hook up your iPhone through your factory headunit? I'd like to be able to stream Pandora/Spotify/Apple Music etc through my headunit. Appreciate any advice you can provide!

I think so! It was one of the first things I got for my B7 when I got it at the end of December. Audio quality is great as well.

Thanks Adam. Was the install difficult at all?

No, very very easy. Remove stereo (make sure you have the stereo removal tools) disconnect a plug and then plug the Dension in, in its place. Done.

I would say yes it still is. I installed mine last night and was very straight forward. That's not the exact unit I got but they're all still good.

    I got this one

I was able to stream my iPhone music with just installing a Tune2air unit from Amazon. If your car has the old iPod connector in the glove box then this is a 1 minute install. MFSW controls work well and you're able to change the station through the Rnse unit. Phone just connects via Bluetooth.

This sounds interesting! Is this what you got: https://www.amazon.com/ViseeO-Tune2A.../dp/B00R2HZ1XU

And how is the sound quality?

It's the one posted in this blog.

So far I have no complaints. It has been the best purchase I have made on Amazon and the product itself makes it so easy to stream my music using any of my iPhone apps (iheart radio, Pandora, YouTube, etc). Just pair your phone after plugging in the dongle and it works by pressing the cd button.

Forgot to mention about sound...as advised in that blog I usually have the volume all the way up on my phone and then I adjust the overall volume of the music/videos through the RNSE or steering wheel controls.

This is a great alternative, thank you.

How/where do you find out if you have the old iPod connector?

If you open up your glovebox on the upper left hand side you should see a connector (30-pin I believe). It would be the same connector you would use for the earlier iPhones. The Tune2air dongle fits perfectly in it. I installed mine and locked the glove box afterwards especially since I have a broken hinge. It's a deep pocket to attach the dongle so it may take some fiddling to connect it properly. Some a4's came equipped with it...symphony II's and those with factory installed RNSE's (anyone please feel free to chime in if I'm mistaken). I'll see if I can take a picture of it and post it here. My RNSE screen is on/off due to a bad display ribbon but the music still plays perfectly fine and the track # still shows up on my dash. You'll need to be in CD mode.

LOL, my display screen too is off because of that stupid ribbon. I've had the replacement in my drawer for 2 years!

Thanks very much for the photo and info. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Lol sounds good! It's a great cheap alternative. I would have gone with a nice aftermarket touchscreen but the archaic look of the RNSE is a great theft deterrent. Plus everything functions the way I need it to so why bother fixing it if it's not completely broken right?

I may have an adapter for you I'm not using. I'll get back to you later today on all of that as well.

Editing this whole post because i answered my own questions after reading up on this product...

The cord connects into your AMI connector port on your OEM iPod dock.. you should not have have to pull out that OEM dock to plug in the tune2air..

I know some Audi docks do not use the AMI port and just go straight to an iPod 30 pin connector and it doesnt seem like there are any of these products that still plug directly into the 30 pin.. and the ones that do, do not support IOS 8+ so it will not work with anything that is running the newest IOS..

Amazon Q&A section was actually helpful for once lol..

The tune2air is dongle that attaches to the old-style 30pin connector which should be in the glovebox (for some this is not an option). I would say it is a cheaper alternative to the Dension unit and is a complete plug and play item. The link you supplied above is the correct dongle. There shouldn't be a cord to connect it as it fits directly to the 30pin connector in the glove box. Turn Bluetooth on. Type 4 digit pin and it should automatically sync every time you get in your car.

Thank you. Where is the OEM iPod dock located? I just went out to the car to check, and that one dongle is the only one I see (and some really old CDs from 2008)!

This is how the connector in the glovebox looks like without the iPod or tune2air dongle attached. Should look exactly like the old style 30 pin connector for the older generation iPods and iPhones!

Thank you. I almost positively do not have that. I'll snap a pic & post when I got out to lunch today. I don't have that entire plastic housing even.

Forgot to add the tune2air dongle fits right into this attachment without the need of a cord. You just need to reach a little bit further to ensure it is connected securely 👍. Turn your Bluetooth ON on your device, press the CD button on your RNSE, sync and enjoy! Just make sure the volume on your device is on max so that the master volume can be controlled by your head unit.

Thanks for showing me that website man! I finally found a way that I could hook up an AUX without going to the damn RNS-E, no offense to anyone, I just think its fckin ugly, but thats any in-dash NAVI, I think they are just an eye sore. Maybe if they could be shut off then I wouldn't mind.

    Also apparently this version
    http://enfigcarstereo.com/DENSION_GWP1AC2.html
(This is for without the RNS-E but the one with was posted above same generation)

Supports the lightning cable through the USB port for Iphone5 but if it supports that lightning cable then the 6 should work just FYI

You may need something like this in order for the tune2air to work.

    http://specdock.com/car/make/audi/a4...-dock-144.html

At least the dongle will be easy to install/remove.

BTW I'm pretty sure you should have a slot under your steering wheel for your manual to go into, it looks pretty crammed in there

It looks like someone removed your OEM dock.. you may need to look into a dension unit instead, or source another dock. I think there was one selling on the classifieds a few weeks ago, not sure if it sold or not..
