Shrieking sound coming from engine bay

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I was idle at a stoplight and heard this nasty shrieking noise. At first I thought it was a broken siren in a nearby lot but after I drove off, the sound followed. The car still builds boost and the noise changes with the RPMs. I thought it might have been a pulley but the more I listen to it, it sounds like it's coming from the turbos.

Have any of you s6/s7 guys experienced this before? Car has an APR Stg1 and my tuner is out of town or else I'd take it straight to the dealer. I feel like I'm gonna hear something pop soon...

Sounds like you are about to be a candidate for a RS7 turbo upgrade. Sounds like a bearing is bad in a turbo. I wish you luck in that it is something simple.

    A mess.

It does sound like a metal on metal squeal, but the turbo should not do that at idle. With that much friction, it would not spin unless under throttle.

My dealer was telling me about this known problem for 4.0T. It's some sort of a membrane valve within (?) the engine (not a diverter valve) that goes bad and start making this crazy honking / whistling noise. Audi dealer will know what to do with it... but your APR tuned... so let us know how that goes.

Don't panic. It's not the turbos. There have been a few reports of this on older S6/7. It's somehow related to the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve. Unfortunately it's a bit of an act to get to it, as it's under the turbo output ducts.

Is there any documentation or TSB out there for this? I'm wondering if I can drive on it, although the embarrassment factor is enough for me to just let it sit lol

That's an air leak sound. It is loud and I'm glad it's not coming from my engine.

So it's definitely the PCV valve. Exact same symptoms at this video:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZ4KwXaAmtU

I took the oil cap off and the sound went away! Unfortunately, I dont think its a good idea to drive it with all that pressure built up...

    Thanks everyone for the help

Yikes! Sounds scary. Glad to hear it's not likely the turbos though. Good luck on getting it fixed!

Its 100% a failed PCV Valve. Requires a bit of removal to get to...

Mine just starting doing this today. My first thought was a belt or tensioner but the pitch didn't change with engine RPM. I also thought it could be the turbos since the sound was coming from that general area, but there are no boost issues and no codes. A 30 second search turned up this thread and video and BINGO it's the exact same sound. My car is already flagged TD1 so it'll be interesting to see how this works out. I could argue however that the PCV valvue should not be affected by increased boost? And it seems to be a known issue....

Audi denied my repair due to TD1 flag (which I knew I had). The dealer I went to however said they would do a one-time good faith repair and cover the parts if I paid the 10 hours labor. This issue is covered by TSB 2040644/5. The faulty part was an oil separator. and not PCV valve. Here is the complete parts list from the work order:

Don't do it. I got around my existing TD1. Long story short, I got the ECU/TCU update and it removed my td1 from Audis database. I brought the car back for this fix and no more tD1! I'll post later tonight with the details (posting this while commuting).

I just paid $2700.00 to have this issue fixed. I'm tuned but not TD1. I'm at 79k miles though so out of warranty. If there's a TSB, does that mean it should have been fixed at no cost?

When under Audi warranty, it might be covered.

The TSB offers instructions on how to fix.

Mine just started doing this. 2 months left under warranty. no tune. I'm also thinking this may be an emission control device, which means 100K mile warranty per federal law.

Does the TSB say if any upgrades were done so It doesn't happen again?

I had the same thing happen right after warranty expired. My local VW/AUDI/PORSCHE tuner did the job for half the dealer. It's all in the labor cost since the part sits in the V under the turbos.

Mine started Thursday evening - MAN is that a loud whistle it makes!!

I hadn't previously noticed this thread, so had no idea what it was, but when I called the dealer to schedule an appointment, they identified it right away. I'll have it back Monday, covered under the CPO warranty, and I'm in a loaner B9 A4 until then.

While it's there, also having them do the 65K mile service, and they're performing the turbo coolant line and ECU updates (per the TSB/recall).

Oh, and BTW - B9 A4 is a slick, slick ride. Unbelievably refined in every way, and not slow.

Got mine done yesterday at the dealer. Warranty flagged for APR tune, I didn't try to hide the flash. S8 4.0.

Paid $1500. Ouch. Independent shop wanted $1300 but dealer gave me brand new A8 for a loaner for free.

I didn't have whistling yet just a code and oil residue around the oil filter cap.

Mine gave out 2 weeks after buying the car. Sounds like a train running over cats. Luckily I have an aftermarket warranty that covered it.

Just wanted to update but my car has started making the sound of death again, although not nearly as bad as before. Starting to eat oil and there seems to be excessive vacuum pressure when I take off the oil cap. I think my replacement part was defective goddamnit. Taking it in today to get checked out. Anyone have an updated pcv/oil sep fail?

I just finished replacing mine tonight and on the box was “E”, but in the box was “D”. I’m hoping that I don’t have to do it again.

Old one was a 'B' for me, replaced with E. According to ECS, there have been 3 iterations of this box: B, D, and E.

For the guys that had a failed PCV/oil separator, did you have any codes stored, CEL or other signs it was failing BEFORE the squealing/whistling noise and high vacuum on the oil cap? And when the noise started, was it gradual or loud all of a sudden?

In WhiteWhiteS7's very informative how to replace Oil Separator thread, he listed P050700 as one of the stored codes in the TSB troubleshooting http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...arator-R-amp-R

I'm wondering if the 2 codes I have are an indication my PCV/oil separator is going bad, codes come back intermittently after being cleared:
P050700: Idle Control System RPM Higher than Expected
P045600: EVAP Emission Control System Very small leak

Would rather be proactive to have it replaced before the horrible noise starts if I can (have 3rd party extended warranty).

I never had squealing but I had a CEL of leak in intake.

Indy shop informed me if you don't remedy the PVC valve issue in a timely manner you risk blowing your rear main seal due to the increase in crank case pressure

my god what else could I possibly need to be fixed now this lol. While attempting to find my coolant leak smell I noticed this sound, sounds like its coming more so from the drivers' size but hard to tell. I hate my local dealer don't trust them doing fixes, has anyone attempted to fix themself?

Hey guys, was wondering if the noise I just noticed on my brand new S6 has something to do with the turbos, and if normal or not. When coming to a stop, hear a winding down noise that sounds like a failing HVAC fan, but it's obviously not the fan, since it winds down. Thought it was the A/C compressor, but I don't think it is. Is it the turbos? Sounds not unlike a leaf stuck on the HVAC fan. It's not loud, since I haven't heard it before due to having the stereo on. I don't really mind if it's normal, but would like to know if it's normal, or something not right in the engine compartment. Even my wife asked me what's that? Since I didn't have the stereo on. Thanks gang.
