    torque converter going bad?

    Hey everyone,
I'm the proud new owner of a 2009 A6 3.0T sedan with 106,000 miles, upgrading from my 2000 A4 2.8 with 215,000 miles. Mostly in love with the car, but have noticed that sometimes when accelerating the RPMs will fluctuate a bit and the car feels like it's kind of being held back in a way. Haven't really noticed any fluctuations while cruising. Performed a TBA and ECM Kick-Down reset, which helped with throttle delay some, but still had the above symptoms.

Based on research, a lot about torque converters came up so I thought I'd investigate. So, on my home from work I logged the TC using VAGCOM for about 20 minutes. Below are a view snippets of data (note the vehicle speed times differ slightly from the rest of the date). As you can see, the TC slip is not always 0rpm when closed, and not always between 20 and 120 rpms when in control mode (these limiting values have popped up for some other Audi models, correct me if they're not applicable to the C6). The column with the G000 header tests to see if slip is 0 rpm when TC is closed, the column with F0 header tests to see if slip is between 20 and 120 rpms when in control mode ("Bad" means it fails the criteria, blank means it passes, and dashes means TC mode is different than the mode being checked in that column).

Even though the slip is 0 rpm the majority of the time the TC is closed, and between 20 and 120 rpms the majority of the time when in control mode, could these values indicated my TC is on its way out? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

You have a updated torque converter, which is not know to go bad.

I suggest a transmission fluid change, and a carbon cleaning. I bet your car will be much better after those two things.

Thanks for your response! I was unaware they updated the TC, but makes some sense with the C6.5 since it was a model refresh. I certainly have considered doing a transmission fluid and filter change since I don't think the car has ever had it, just didn't want to do it if I would have to change the TC in a while anyways. Will definitely look into it. It's my understanding that the supercharged engine does not have a huge issue with carbon deposits, but could still be something to look into for the RPM issue when accelerating.
