Could be worse. If you had lived here in the early 90's, you would be paying double that, easily.

Oddly, I pay more for my 2002 Passat wagon than I do for my 2004 A4 sedan (the wagon is a little heavier).

Seattle is the biggest joke for registration, not to mention WA in general charging sales tax multiple times on the same vehicle. Other states get by just fine without financially raping their citizens. Maybe if Seattle stopped hemoraging money on retarded useless projects, your car tabs would go back to $30 like they were supposed to be.

Didn't they double recently to pay for the bankrupt bus system?

Which isn't surprising since you can use the same ticket multiple times.

The TBD's and RTA's is the way they're collecting more money without having to deal with tim eymans initiative roll back. Funny thing is that those were voted on and passed by the people.

    http://www.seattle.gov/stbd/faqs

I agree about sales tax being charged on the same car each time its sold. After the tax collected exceeds the current value it should be a flat $100.

State Sales Tax, Property Tax, Gas Tax, Commercial Parking Tax, Business and Occupation Tax....

The state has plenty of sources of income, they just specialize in mismanaging most of them, hence WA always needing more

C'mon Charles! SOMEbody has to pay that $18,000,000 to the Red Robin founders who were screwed by the City/County in that Sea-Tac real estate deal. Might as well be us honest bystanders right? Even though the guilty crooks will not be charged with a single crime, we citizens need to pay that $18 million. Then there's the 10's of millions in LAwsuits against SPD every year. Who's gonna pay that? Then what about the stadiums that 90% of us will never set foot in? What about Bertha? She's NEVER GOING TO STOP DRILLING RIGHT TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH!!

    The rant never ends.

Funny. I just got a tab renewal notice today on our d3 a8. $95 or something, and for the first time on a car I've ever owned, I have to pay a vehicle weight fee of $45.

Have to love the idiots who willingly voted in a "blank check" for a choo-choo.

Sold a vehicle the other day, and they now charge you to even report the sale! Its only $8, but it use to be free. Even on the piece of the title I retained it said "report for free online"...

I'm all for paying my 'fair share' to keep things running and working well, but I have basically given up. I know this is a 'state' tax issue mostly, but it's hard to find evidence of our tax money being used the way they tell us it is. Seems like the roads we need aren't being repaired anymore, each fix is just a temporary patch and another hole opens up and needs to be *fixed* again every year. The taxes go up and our infrastructure corrodes further every day while politicians fuck us in the ass and take home bags of money.
I have resorted to gifting cars when I sell them now. I fill out the paperwork and GIFT it to the new owner. And NOW even if the tabs are valid they MAKE THE NEW OWNER BUY NEW ONES and A NEW LICENSE PLATE EVERY TIME!! Fuck it, the tax money is just going into politicians pockets anyway, my commute is 1/2 mile and people buying 15 year old used cars (that I sell) need to eat more than they need to pay for some rich jerks retirement.
I think I've gifted half a dozen cars in a few years.

There are only 2 things needed to make an Audi work properly - Duct tape and WD40. If it moves and it shouldn't - Duct tape. If it doesn’t move and it should - WD40.

Wait, his name is charles too?! weird....

Also yea those new RTA taxes are a bitch. My wife's 2012 Q5 reg was an eye watering $433 this year....

I voted for all this because the majority of the cost goes to fund the light rail system which we desperately need (and anyone who tries to say otherwise is completely wrong). Yea it sucks and I definitely feel mislead on the actual extent to which the increase would be, but it is what it is. Since RTA is based on their MSRP - Depreciation model, its basically a luxury tax on people with expensive cars. And frankly I'm more or less okay with that. As it scales higher, in a general sense, for people who have higher incomes.

Please explain 1) how this is a blank check (there were very clear numbers stated in the voters guide) and 2) how I'm an idiot for voting for an initiative that would directly affect my property value and increase my quality of life in a very material way.

Would you propose to do NOTHING about the traffic problem caused by the huge growth around here? It sounds like your solution is to do nothing and just complain about Big Govt.

Doing NOTHING for the past 30 years is why we're facing this issue right now. I've lived here that long and the infrastructure hasn't changed one iota until a handful of years ago when they started the tunnel project and expanding 520. Traffic is fucking awful fucking everywhere. It directly leads to lost revenue in places and causes people to leave the city. Doing nothing will cost you and the city more money long term that doing something.

You can’t just walk back everything you were saying because I disagree. Your comments very much touched on anti-big-government, libertarian talking my points, hence the assumption you leaned that direction.

And I didn’t take offense to your comments, I was simply providing a counterpoint written in strong-ish language I suppose. but saying the light rail is the dumbest thing ever and not providing a better idea as a counterpoint doesn’t really validate your criticism of the plan. I’m all ears if you have a better idea but massive infrastructure builds are extremely expensive and extremely time consuming.

However I’d you call me a liberal snowflake I swear I will be triggered SO HARD!

Don't worry, I wont uproot and reverse my entire position just because you didnt share the same viewpoint. Rest assured that my personal opinions have not changed.

“Arguing with anonymous strangers on the Internet is a sucker's game because they almost always turn out to be—or to be indistinguishable from—two self-righteous sixteen-year-olds both of whom possess infinite amounts of free time.”

If in 20+ years from now ST3 is completed on time, on budget and effectively eliminates traffic congestion to a noticeable degree at a more efficient cost:benefit ratio than any other alternative, all while not unfairly burdening select groups with heavier portions of the bill, I will admit I was wrong. However, in that time between now and then, I can go on living despite knowing that someone, somewhere on the internet disagrees with me.

At least we both agree on one thing, a shared appreciation for decent car brands. So we do still have some common ground from which to maintain our friendship

Wait we can argue on the internet and not be mortal enemies? Naw...

Hey I’m happy to take that wager. I feel like I’ll win but who knows, a LOT can happen in the decade it’s going to take to buildout the different phases of the system. Like large boring machines getting stuck under the city because some dipshit forgot he left a huge core sample tube directly in the path of the boring machine.........sigh...

I am pretty sure it breaks some laws of internet physics, but perhaps we just transcended to the otherside of the great unknown

You, Good Sir, have yourself a deal. I would propose a wager of a beer, however in the event that I am unfortunately right, traffic will be so bad by that point it would take us another decade of sitting in it just to meet up somewhere...

We’ll probably all have self driving cars and/or personal jetpacks by then so maybe traffic won’t be so bad. Gotta watch out for those damn Jetpacking Under the Influence tickets though. Shit’s no joke.

I paid almost $600 for my '10 S4 last year in Nevada. It will probably be the same this year.

$890 for my 2014 S5, Nevada stupidly charges a percentage based on MSRP! Not even price paid! And it goes down slowly as hell...

If there's anyone in Washington who's military, there's an excise tax exemption for the state. It goes down to around $100.

That’s what Washington does too. It’s basically a luxury tax. If it was based on sale price then everyone would just put made up sale prices on the bill of sale and pay the seller in cash to dodge the tax.
