Tinted windows - Issues in NJ?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So i'm looking to get my windows tinted more so to just change up the look of the car and obviously it's looked down upon by our wonderful law enforcement For those in NJ, have you had any real issues getting pulled over or ticketed for tints? I know its more of a YMMV situation but just figured i'd ask.

I've got someone in south jersey that is willing to tint everything but the windshield for $250. Is that a decent price? Also being in NJ, how dark should I go? The car is black.

I actually don't know what the tint on my s5 is, I bought the car with it. But I've had no issues yet, thankfully.

Tinted windows - Issues in NJ?

Idk about jersey police but I've never had a problem in NY. The legal limit here is 70% and I've got 25%. Police have more important things to do than tint tickets, it's more of an add on offense if you get pulled over for something else.

Quickly creeped on your instagram to try and get an idea about the 40%. Might be a tad too dark for me. Probably considering something between 50-70.

For those that have gotten tints, does $250 for everything besides the windshield seem reasonable?

I've got 15% all around (black interior so any darker would have looked like limo tint. Get pulled over in NYC all the time for them, no tickets, OTJ. New Jersey, I've never gotten pulled over ever. I'm there three times a week.

For those with tints, would anyone mind posting pictures of their cars just so I can get an idea. I was thinking like 50-70% and you're all way below that so now I think 50-70 is going to be too light and not even worth it

There are plenty of pics in there, but be aware that the look of the tint will differ from brand to brand, metallic to ceramic, different angles and sunlight. There are times where my 40% doesn't look like it's there at all.

Thanks for that. Looks like it'll be a game time decision between 35 and 50. Anything over 50 is definitely going to be too light in my opinion even though the car is black on black.

Tinted windows - Issues in NJ?

The lighter the paint the dark the tint will look. A white car at 50% typically looks way darker than a black car at 50%.

The front windows will look lighter than the rear because of the amount of light the windshield lets in, while the seats block it from reaching the back. Keep that in mind also.

Edit: The picture is 25% sides and 18% rear.

35% on the sides and 20% on the back window. I haven't had any issues but my son gets pulled over with his WRX-STI constantly. He even got pulled over in my S6 for tints..he's only 17. I love my tints and feel that it enhances the fluid shape of the S6.

It all really depends on the situation..The cop, how you're driving, the town you're in, etc. My car was in Florida (Jersey Tags) mostly until recently. When I got back to my little suburb town in Bergen County, cops would pull me over every so often. I drive a slightly modified B6 A4 with 20% all around. The car has a lip spoiler and taillights so the car kinda stands out and looks like it means business. Not to mention the cops in my town know me (from my adolescent high school days) and like to bother me, lets just say some of them have it out for me.. Circling back to what I said above, it depends on the cop and the situation. I've been pulled over all over NJ and let go with a warning and other times I've gotten tickets.

If you're thinking of going with a lighter tint, I'm sure you'll be fine. While on that topic, I feel 70% is hardly a tint, probably couldn't even tell it's there - I'd say go 50% at least. If you're gonna do it..DO IT! It's the really dark tints cops target as they are usually some punk kids up to no good or myself :P

Anyone know the going rate of tinted window tix these days. Back in the day it was $35-40 in my area in NJ. When I was younger I thought it was a small price to pay. I also really valued (and still do) the fact that no one could see me, I could pick my nose all I wanted

Although I'm sure cops won't bother you with a light tint such as 50% or 70%, I'd weigh your options and investigate the price of tinted window tix. If they're $60-70 these days, I'd question if it's really worth it.

If you don't mind the hassle/ chance of being pulled over every so often, I'd say go for it. People like us will appreciate seeing it on the road and and more importantly, you will feel that much better driving it.

    Good luck

I've got 50% ceramic all the way around except the windshield at 80%. I'd love to go darker up front, like 15% to match the rear, but I'm in NYC and it seems likely to get you pulled over here. I've never been pulled over while in NJ, and I'm there pretty frequently. 50% (or for that matter probably even 35%) isn't likely to get you a ticket unless you've done something else to really piss off the LEO.

What's the consensus between same % all around, again excluding windshield. Or lighter on the driver/passenger and darker on rear sides/rear window.

When you have same all around it will already look like the fronts are lighter than the back due to the amount of sunlight let into the front via the windshield. Personally I don't like when the fronts look lighter than the back but unless you tint the windshield (illegal almost everywhere) it'll always look that way.

I run 15% all around and 35% on full windshield on my daily driver, Subaru. Limited hassle.

When I was 20% all around and 80% windshield on my modded Audi, got ticketed for window tint 4 times in 4 years, not bad. I now run 80% Llumar Air Blue all around, zero hassle.

I run 80% Llumar Air Blue on my full windshield on the Audi. Great on Hot days and still cuts down on glare slightly.

80% Llumar Air Blue also on front windshield. 15% or rear glass. Looks like 5% because of the sharp slope of glass and privacy panels under the glass. This along with a gloss black vinyl wrap on roof of white car probably resulted in the attn of LEO that was sitting idle. He pulled me over after I drove by at 15 mph on quiet Franklin st. in Greenpoint on a late Sunday afternoon. Slightly overcast day and the last day of the month did not help. Full car with wife and two toddlers in back did not help. Mention of tints already on used car did not help.

Hopefully can get ticket reduced/waived with receipt of tint removal. Have appt this weekend to take off 15% ceramics (2 months old) on the side windows and going with 50% Pinnacle One ceramics because it really bothers me to pay tickets for tints and creates undeserved animosity toward LEOs doing their job. 50% still not legal in NYS but looks barely there.

Tint meter read 17-18%. As consolation, he said I'm getting dinged only for one window, not four.

How much is the tinted window ticket these days? And what is this ticket per window he mentions? Never heard of such a thing... Sounds preposterous.

IMO windshield tint, even at 80%, you're asking for trouble -However, I'm curious what 80 on the windshield and 50 on the sides looks like, probably really clean come to think of it. What color is your interior?

Either gotta run same percentage side windows excluding windshield and back window (back window you can go darker than the sides, if you like) or as 2010A6 states, darker Driver/pass than rear windows...Or don't do it at all. I.e. No 35% front windows and 15% on back, Its practically the same as running tints on just the rear doors and not the fronts. Although its abiding by the law, can't hate on that, it just doesnt look good ...Most car guys frown upon it.

In my opinion, what most people accept and admire in the community: Driver/Passenger and rear doors (all side windows) should be the same percentage - People accept the fact that sun comes through the windshield during the day and makes the front windows "appear" lighter than the back, a trained eye can still tell all the sides match up which is ultimately the important factor.

I'm still waiting for it to show up in the system but the guidlines in the back of ticket point to $98 in NYC. Have seen on the forum of others getting multiple tickets for multiple windows.

Interior is black with black headliner. Atleast I have the beautiful diamond stitch seats to show off. That's the only thing that's making me feel ok about dropping $$$ again getting the 50% on the sides. With the 15% you cannot see the interior at all walking by the car.

Last time I will see her with the dark shades...

Ticket is $54+$2fee to pay online.

80% Air Blue on full windshield is nothing. Air Blue is less of a blue hue look than the Mercedes OEM glass. Zero trouble and I've asked 3 state trooper friends if my car is tinted and they all said no. Hell, even got a ticket in NY state when I had 15% on my Audi and by the time I went to court to get it dismissed I had my Audi done in full Air Blue 80% on every piece of glass and the same cop who wrote me the ticket said I was clear, because I took all the window tint off... ;).

80% Llumar Air Blue on all windows including full windshield:

Depends on where you are, even in SJ. I have a 3rd gen cummins black with 30% front and back, truck is obviously over the limit but in Salem county where I live I never get pulled over, but shore cops and cops from nicer towns love to hand out tickets for tint. Never been ticketed by the state police for tint though.

I think in the end it comes down to knowing the cops in your area and whether or not they're revenue makers/out to "get" you. I say go for it, tint looks good lol

I've have tinted windows in every single car i've owned since 2001 in NJ. in previous years I ran 5% all around. I currently run 20% all around. Pulled over ONCE just for tint. Other than that instance I have never had a single issue. I firmly believe and base it off this, Drive ridiculously = asking for trouble. As long as you respect your town cops will recognize your vehicle and be more forgiving. Atleast in my experiences.

Tinted windows - Issues in NJ?

OP, stop being soft lol NJ had now moved to OBDII emissions only and will not fail inspection for tints. As mentioned above, tint fine iirc is 54$ total not per window and they don't make you remove it. Just don't limo tint your windshield and don't drive like an asshat, you should be ok. GL
