    Intake piping and flow

I'd like to start a discussion about intakes. I don't care about the filter in this discussion. It's not meant to be an argument about which overly priced filter is the best.

I have been toying with an idea for some time about doing a custom intake, which in my research has not been done before. The only question that I really have is intake piping size. I was hoping that I could have somewhere in the realm of 3 inch intake piping from the filter to the TB. However I don't understand the flow properties when piping needs to neck down. To me if you manage to have 3 inch intake piping all the way to the TB but the TB then necks down to 2 inches, then that 3 inch piping is a waste and you might as well just used 2 inch piping the whole way.

It seems to me that if you wanted to really make use of the piping you would need to start at the intake manifold and change everything to be the same size piping as the inner diameter of the intake manifold, as any larger piping would be restricted to the size of the intake manifold.

Dude, there are so many intake threads..and you want to start another? It's a PROVEN FACT that aftermarket intakes on the 2.0T b7 do little if anything to improve performance. Only thing they do is add a little sound.

The only intake threads I've ever found were along the lines of is the apr or other cone filter intakes with it. And little discussion on the actual intake piping size and opening up the entire track, not just popping on a cone filter. Perhaps you can point me to a thread that talks about the piping size?

Throttle body? You should make the pipe as wide as the turbo inlet.

Any neck down becomes your bottle neck.

People have done custom tubing for a while. You suck at searching

Here you go. Your search is over.
    Filter-3"-2.75"-2.25"-turbo- 2.25"-2.5"-intercooler-2.5"-2.75"-Q5 throttle body.

Thanks pule that's essentially what I was looking to do.. I guess my searching on this was weak sauce cause all I could ever find about it was arguments about air filters and nothing about the tubing.

Essentially you are limited by the turbo inlet-outlet. And throttle body. Go for Q5, it's 2.83" I believe. All other tubing is 2.5". Use welding where possible don't rely on silicone couplers.
2.5" is more than sufficient for ko3,ko4 turbos.

But this will produce a lot of sound. It will be loud :) if you don't want it loud, just put a panel filter like K&N or pipercross and stick with OEM air box. It has Ben proven that AFTERMARKET kits like APR, etc don't do shit! If it's the sound you after what I posted above is the best option. Might even give you a 0.5hp ;)
    Enjoy!

If you run a 3in intake your man reading will be off. the stock may size is 2.75. you could use the atp turbo mad pipe that fits 3in pipes but goes down to 2.75 right where the maf reads, not sure how good that works though.

Wasn't exactly looking for sound, could care less about it to be honest. I thought I was on to something as I never seen it done before but I guess these intakes are just about as good as they get.
