    09-11 Audi A6 3.0T questions

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm currently shopping around for a new DD and came across some Audi A6's with the 3.0T for pretty good prices.

What can / should I expect as far as things to break or things that will need replacement on the A6?

My other choices are currently are 08+ bmw 335xi, b7 Audi S4 or the Audi A6 3.0T.

I've done my research on the 335's and S4's but I haven't looked into the Audi A6 3.0T's much besides them having the same motor as the S4 (detuned?)

Any help on upkeep and mods for the Audi's, coming from a Subaru WRX(bugeye)

i would rule the b7 s4 out right away! at 100k the motor is pretty much toast and its a 10K repair.

I do love the 335 but I've heard horror stories about those engines and I personally have something against AWD BMWs, I don't know why but if I were to get a BMW I would want RWD for AWD I'll stick with Audis.

I have a 2010 3.0t A6 and its been great, the car is a beast. It's big but doesn't drive super big. I drive 1500-2000 a month and its a great car to spend the day in. The biggest disadvantage with the a6 is the transmission, the S4 has the same motor with a much better transmission. the 3.0ts seem to be pretty bulletproof, there are some oil consumption issues here and there but it's hard to know if that will ever affect your car. I would look for one with good records and relatively low mileage. The tough things is 2009 was the first year they used this engine so there aren't a ton with really high mileage out there so it's kinda hard to tell how they will be in the long term.

Being located in Alaska I would prefer AWD for my DD. Really leaning towards the 335 cause of all the after market support but I am a huge audi fan and planned on getting a b8+ s4 after the 335 then I stumbled onto the audi a6 3.0T at good prices.

S4 is also my least fav as there arent any good go fast mods that arent $$$ and all the known issues with timing chain guides and engine scoring on the walls. Plus the interior of the b7 is very dated, but I really like the exterior and that v8 grunt lol. Well now I need to find an A6 to test drive.

Wouldn't that be the very same motor that's in my '08 A6 4.2? The one with 145k miles on it that runs like brand new?

Don't let a few horror stories dissuade you from that motor.

    Yea b7 s4 is a 4.2 motor!
I have owned b5 s4,b6 s4 and b7 rs4 and all i have to say is,it all depends on the previous owner if they took care of the car, when i was about to sell my previous cars i had ppl lined up to buy because they knew it was great condition car!
And now i also own a 09 A6 3.0T avant and i efin love it:)
Btw u definitely need a all wheel drive for snow and if u need space to carry stuff around look for a avant!

no it's a different motor, the b6 and b7 s4 s4 for whatever reason pretty much always require a rebuild around 100k. I think I've only ever seen one over 100k that wasn't rebuilt.

As far as which car to get between the 335 and A6 here is my take

    335
    pros:
    looks
    aftermarket mods
    turbo

    cons:
    engine issues HPFP related
smaller if that matters to you

    A6 3.0t
    pros:
bigger if you are into that
    always highway cruiser
    good power

    cons:
very little aftermarket, some s4 parts cross over but there isn't a ton
doesn't stream bluetooth audio (my biggest issue with the car)

I'm on my way PCSing from Alaska on Friday and I own a 05 3.2. It's served me well on ice even with summers haha. I honestly would say go with the 3.0 over the S4 or 335i.

@exogen I have owned and driven 2 C6 model A6; an 05 4.2 and an 09 #.0T. I have put 100k miles on my 09 since it bought it 1 year used. The most expensive repair I had to do was replace the harmonic balancer/lower crank pulley at about 110K miles ($1200). ANY 3.0t should have this replaced when going over 100K miles because it is not a matter of "If" it will fail but "When". The design uses a rubber bushing sandwiched between the balancer and pulley so as to reduce vibration. As with any thing made of rubber, it will degrade over time.

Other than that and some minor oil leaks over the years, I have had no issues. I would highly recommend the 3.0t A6!

If the 3.0T is running the Simos 8.4 management you can flash it as well and we are doing a group buy on the Fluidampr crank pulleys so you can take care of adding more power and getting rid of the stock problematic crank pulley. Also being in Alaska we have remote tuning, so you install the tune yourself.

Wow seems like the 3.0T is a pretty good motor as far as a maint aspect. Good to know!

Thanks @chris I followed you guys pretty hard when I was trying to get into a b5 s4 a few years ago. I'll def check you guys out again if I go with the Audi, by chance do you know how I can tell what software the ecu is on (certain model years switch?)

I've actually got a buddy over at kendall, Alaska is just too expensive and I'll end up buying 1 out of state but Kendall dont know that while I test drive... haha

Get the 3.0T engine. Its a beast and has a lot of room for more power if you so desire.

Your 08 4.2 is FSI (direct injected) and is 32 valves instead of 40 valves... Essentially its a whole different motor, just the same setup with accessories.

If anything, go for a B8 S4. You could probably snag an '09, '10 in the 20's nowadays.

General rule of thumb on that B7 S4 is to take the extra step and get a compression test done before buying. Hit and miss as to which ones will $hit themselves, compression will tell you. If it's an option, go with the 3.0T as others have said...It's phenomenal

'10 3.0TFSI A6 Avant owner checking in here. I love this car. It's powerful (that's an understatement), comfortable, fun to drive, and simply an amazing car that I can wholeheartedly recommend. Bonus is that it's also fackin awesome for lugging stuff, family and friends around in.

I love my 09 A6 3.0T but if it's possible, I would recommend looking at 2010 as a starting point, simply because of the better MMI NA options.
