Just want your honest opinion about transmission fluid change.

    Hey guys,

I just need your opinion, i don't need any "how to" simply because there is a lot on this topic.

So the car in question is 2010 audi a6 3.0TFSI with automatic 6speed transmission. It has 115K miles on it.

Question/Opinion: Is it a good idea to change the transmission fluid, and has anyone done it at similar miliage.

    Thanks.

I'm at 91k on my 2010 and I will be changing fluid this year. My friend is a tech and he says yes they say its lifetime but when the tranny blows it lasted its lifetime so I figure its worth doing.

Opinions differ on this issue. If the transmission fluid had been changed previously and routinely then changing it again is fine. However, if this is the first time to be changed, you may actually make the tranny operate poorly. Let me explain:

Keeping tranny oil fresh removes the small particles that tend to develop over time. However, it the fluid has never been changed on a high mileage tranny, those same particles actually help the tranny operate. If you drain the fluid and flush out those particles, you may experience slipping, etc.

I have a very trusted mechanic that has worked on all of my cars. I went to him with the request to change the fluid on the tranny (115k on the clock and never been done before). He pulled a sample of the fluid and recommended I DONT change it for the very reasons stated above.

Change it. It can't hurt anything, but can help longevity.

What Sin's mechanic is talking about is the particles that increase the friction inside. Essentially on older transmissions and very high mileage transmissions, they are so worn down that these particles (metal shavings essentially) help it not slip.

With new transmissions, if it's slipping after a fluid change it'll go out very soon regardless. Also, with fluid changes you can only get 2/3 of the old fluid out unless you have a while to wait or do more work to get the rest out. This is a good balance between old fluid and new.

When i changed mine at 105k, it was very dark and was not near as lubricating compared to the new stuff.

Mine has 212k miles and bought it with 90k. I want to change it, but it scares me because I'm not experiencing any issues.

If it's never been done, I would do it. Diff fluid wouldn't be a bad idea either.
