Question How to test radiator fans?

Can anyone direct me to a procedure for testing the radiator fans?

One of them should always come on whenever the AC is on, correct?

    Nothing in the Bentley Manual.

Every car has two fans. 1 for ac 1 for radiator. So yes it should be on when ac is on.

Easy way to test the fans themselves?
Test the radiator fan control module?
Is there a thermoswitch to test?

you can use VCDS output test to test the fans & control module. Or you can directly apply 12v to each fan.

If you have access to a snap on... Its only a few clicks, otherwise I would suggest finding power and ground and give it 12 v. If that's the voltage required.

    I'm sorry, I don't have a VCDS.

I found one connection at the bottom, between the two fans (after removing the plastic skid plate) but it doesn't appear to go to either of the fan motors. I removed the two bolts for the control module at the top, snipped off a few zip-ties and can still can't see where the fan connectors are.

I guess I'm going to have to remove the front end in order to get better access to the fans so that I can run 12v to each of them in order to try to determine whether it's my fans (seems unlikely that both would be malfunctioning at the same time) or the control module. What a pain in the ass!

I'm currently dealing with the same sort of issue, the fans are hard wired into the control module. If you want to test them by running 12v to the fans, you'll have to cut the wire. In my case, the brushes on the smaller fan were completely shot, which I guess caused the other fan to not get enough current to start, it would just sit there and move slightly. I'm in the process of just replacing both of them since the brushes on the large fan were pretty close to being worn out. I'm guessing it probably spins a bit slower causing the motor brushes to last a little longer.

Gave up and took it to a local Audi specialist that was nice enough to diagnose it for free. Bad fan control module. Going to do the swap myself.
