    removing oil pump chain tensioner dowel pin

    thread has pictures..

    I have an 2000 A6 with the 2.7l TT, APB engine.

    I am 'trying' to remove the oil pump chain tensioner dowel pin, so that I can replace a broken tensioner.


    For the life of me I cannot figure out how to remove the dowel pin.
    Tried prayers, channel locks.. even removed the Main bearing bolts [on a junkyard car]
    No joy..

    Thought maybe some of you S4/ RS4 guys with the same engine might have solved this problem???

    I thank you deeply for any and all useful information...

    Hopefully for a solution

    I don't think that dowel comes out of the main cap.

    So you removed the alloy front crank seal assembly? I think that is the only way you can get the tensioner to slide over the dowel. I don't know what threaded portion you are talking about.

    Per Elsa -

    Chain Tensioner for oil pump - checking and replacing

    -Remove Bumper

    -Move lock carrier to service position

    -Remove ribbed belt

    -Remove Lower Section of Oil Pan
    *For checking - Insert a screwdriver between chain and chain tensioner and press screwdriver against chain tensioner, If no tension can be felt and the chain is not being tensioned, this means the chain tensioner is malfunctioning and must be replaced.

    Removal of tensioner

    -Remove front sealing flange (requires removing the oil supply lines from the oil pump, replace tensioner).

    -Reverse for assembly

    As stated in the post above you need to remove the front sealing flange (better also get a new gasket)
    Chain tensioner just slides in onto the dowel. Here is a picture:

    The missing info was the
    "Remove front sealing flange"
    Everything else I was able to find was referring to just 'a bolt's

    You don't know how relieved I am to have a solution...
    Only thing that is a bummer is that I just replaced the front seal last month... 😞
    But I can see the light at the end of the tunnel..

    It's oil pan up orientation... but it all makes sense.

    No I have to take off the front seal assembly...
    I mistakenly thought there was just a bolt I could take out holding in the tensioner...
    That would have been too easy... haha

    in't that the truth.... tempted to drill and tap and make it "bolt in"
    have to see if I can get a doner cover to test on.

    Don't reinvent the wheel. You'd need a shouldered bolt with a matching OD to the tensioner pivot's ID. If you damaged or scored the dowel trying to remove it, take the cap to a machine shop and have them install a new one, or it will just chew up the tensioner.
