I just had a service manager inform me that I did not need to replace the timing belt on my 2002 S6 as it has a chain. WTF?
I have a rosstech vcds HEX-USB+CAN Interface and cam lock bar to rent with deposit in the Charlotte area. Like all C5 owners I am looking for local parts!

There's been so many variants of the 4.2 its probably just as confusing to them as it is to us.

Actually, that very conversation took place this past weekend at Camp Allroad.

Do not do it Don't go to the dealership. You're lucky you haven't let them open the hood yet. Do it yourself, or find a guy local and get the beers out and wave them around.
A competent mechanic will not be able to resist the beers.

I was looking to verify the date and mileage of the last belt change when the manager informed me that it had a chain. I stated that I was certain it had a belt and she insisted it is a chain. I know it was changed recently, I just wanted them to look up the date when it was changed.

Audi spends most of its time and money to train its employees on new cars, not 14 year old ones. If she was a service manager, then shes probably been around audis for a bit, but i think its still a honest mistake. Most 4.2 V8s the dealers see are in S4s, C6 A6s, and A8s. In the big picture, Audi didn't make very many timing belt V8s.
