    Rear tag bracket WTF

So Yea WTF. How do you get that rear tag bracket off. I had to take the plate off today to pick up a new car and those stupid clip nuts fell behind the bracket and i can't get them out. I took off the 2 tqs screws that I thought hold the bracket to the trunk lid and no go. it won't even budge. I managed to get one of them clipped back in so i can put the plate back on. But the only thing is that the inner trunk liner has to come off to get to more bracket screws. Has anyone else had their rear tag bracket off before? Im about to take it up to the dealer for warranty since those clip nuts fell out of the factory bracket.

Had the same problem, I just took it to the dealer under the warranty and made them fix it. Took them 10-15 minutes

Had this happen as well, seems like such a stupid design. I just used some short self tapping screws and mounted the plate right into the bracket...

Same thing happened to me. Now my plate is held on with double sided tape and two screws at the bottom.

Had the same problem on two Audis. Those retainer nuts strip, rust, and fall-out easily.

In both cases I was able to carefully pry the bottom edge of the plastic holder just enough so the OEM retainer nuts fell out. You can also slip a little telescoping magnet behind there to get them. I pushed all of mine out and replaced them with front mounting nylon license plate nuts from a local auto parts store. Won't ever rust, can't fall behind, and fit tightly into the OEM holes.

Its the worst bracket design ever. On my brand new 6, the freaking retainer nut turned along with the screw when I tried to mount the plate. So the plate was held onto the bracket by 3 screws. Ended up with shitty rattle that I could even hear inside the car. Took the dealership almost 2 weeks to figure out where the rattle was coming from since I had no idea either.

So I had to replace it as well but the dealer wanted like 100$ to do the install and I refused to pay that out of principle. Went to home depot and bought a 25$ heat gun. Used said heat gun to heat up the bracket at the sites of adhesive (constantly keep moving the gun and keep giving the plate very minor tugs until you feel it move when it warms up enough). Then I used adhesive removal to get the goo off the trunk. Reapplied the new one after.

That was the short of it essentially. I picked everything up in regards to adhesive removal from youtube. Just gotta make sure to not overheat on spot and keep the gun moving and then not to rub adhesive remover too hard on the paint.

The whole process took approx. 30 mins. Returning the heat gun to HD after took another 15 since I will never use the damn thing again =P
