Goodby A4! Brought another S6 home..

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The Ultrasport was a 'nice little car". I did enjoy it briefly, but when I realized the trans was shifting for me while in manual mode I knew it had to go. Seriously.
Manual mode, 2nd gear if the engine the car would shift OUT of the power band at like 2900rpm and UP into useless 3rd gear to about 1600 rpm. Constantly. Fuckin pissed me off and I knew I couldn't live like that and I knew I couldn't commit the effort to a 6mt swap for a 4 cylinder.
So, with good timing I re-found a car I had known the owner would eventually sell.
Ming Blue. Really decent shape. 151k miles. Drives smoooooth. I knew it had silver interior w/ Alcantara inserts, but didn't know about the other goodies.
Came with literally all the usual missing stuff, cargo cover, extra keys etc..
But the Solar Sunroof is a bonus! It's weird.
And that damn rear seat! Also weird.
Anyway, couple crappy pics. Seems to run fabulous. Needs one manifold linkage arm and some TLC. But...SO much better. Feels like home again.

Just adding some horsepowers. I think I impressed the p.o. by saying it had a broken manifold linkage within the 100ft of driving it.

    That oughtta do it.

Bob looks great. So does that make 3 S6's that you've had?

I'm trying to get my sleeping beauty awake and head out to Wenatchee to see my buddy this weekend. In a turn of events we may be starting a business in your neck of the woods but I'll find out more once I head over this weekend July 30th - Aug 1st.

The solar roof is moderately useful. Had it in my old 4.2 and it did keep the car a bit cooler when parked in the summer. I liked the window shades that came with it more to be honest, not that they make as much difference in the Avant vs the sedan due to the extra non-shaded windows in the back. I bought a set of bespoke press fit screens instead to compensate. I was also starting a project to figure out how to re-wire the solar roof to act as a trickle charger for the battery when my A6 was so graciously killed by a distracted driver.

Yeah, you could say that. I've owner a B6/3.0/6speed Avant and the recent 1.8/Auto Ultrasport Avant. If I had to have either I'd take the 3.0 with the manual again, that was a decent car. I'm not sure what ruined the USP for me, the auto or the 1.8. But without SIGNIFICANT modifications I just cannot see why you'd drive one when you can have a V8 for less money.

That sunroof is definitely a weird thing. Seems to be the only component in the car that isn't managed by a 'module that is readable over OBD. I figure that as long as it works it's cool to have. I hadn't seen one in person so it's still strange that there's no interior sunroof panel you can slide open.

Ya, it's actually a pretty dumb system. The slider isn't there because it's obviously not see through. That said, you'll want to look up how to remove the headliner cover and expose the wiring. The system doesn't operate on temp, just on light. So if there's enough light to power the roof then it turns the HVAC fan on to suck it outside air. Great in the summer, not so flash in our PNW winters as it will cause the car to fog badly due to the moisture in the air. You can prevent that by simply unplugging the ground.

Well son-a-bitch. That's some very good info to have. What light sensor does it run off? Or is it built into the panel?

No sensor at all, if the panel is getting enough light to generate electricity then it powers the HVAC fan to circulate outside air into the car.

The sunroof is a AOA ordered car. so that is always cool to me. if someone ordered it they're more likely to take care of it.

i have the same interior it sucks to keep clean.

as far as getting the fuzzy balls off the seat i had the best luck with some 220 grit sand paper a vacuum and patience.

Sandpaper on the seats...dry?..obviously? Okay...good tip, worth a try. Rear seat is mint. Passenger is excellent, no 'pilling' but has a water stain, drivers is structurally awesome but needs some cleaning up.
Ron I would have tried to make you a deal on your car...but I was on a budget these days, and with shipping I couldn't insult you..

Like I said earlier..this car seems to have come with all the little bits that are usually missing; I only just now checked the manuals- Original Window sticker, "key code" keychain thingy, and the original "AUDI PEN" ! That's 30hp right there. Like how it says "AWESOME AVANT" in the corner. lol.

The old door blades were starting to come apart so I had a spare set of mismatched blades..and the chrome against Ming Blue seems to work so I fake aluminum'd them.
You'd think they're Allroad blades if you didn't know the difference. Look 100% aluminum from more than 6 inches away.

Are you planning to swap either of the 2 you own currently?

Also, if you happen to find a set of ming blades like I did, I think they look pretty damn good color matched to the car.

I'd buy my wife an s6 if I didn't think the trans would explode 4 minutes after purchase.

Good move. There is nothing like that V8 pulling you along cased in that solid and somewhat timeless chassis.

    Hey , We're Matchers!

The Silver S6 has an Audi NEW trans in it as of the week we got it 3 years ago and seems solid. The White or Blue ones I assume are on borrowed time but drive absolutely awesome. So as far as a swap goes I guess one of them might get the treatment. I still have a rebuilt 5hp24 that needs a reverse drum sitting in my shed...not sure if I could stomach fixing that and putting it into one if I had to.
This Ming Blue car though is awesome. Drives straight, no wobbles, and everything works- it was 106* yesterday and the cluster didn't even fade. Got some KW's coming in the mail for it..hopefully they ride decent.

kW v1's ? I thought about st's but remembered how much I hated them. Went with h&r coilovers this time and I'm happy so far. Firm but not bone jarring. Not bouncy now that I raised them up either.

Actually, I was confused, since KW makes ST (I'm told) - the ones I have coming are ST's. Anyway, the price was TOO good to pass up. I've tried a variety of other mixes of springs struts and I got these for less than I could make a 'cup kit' for so I figured I'd try them out.
Really dont even know where the base-adjustment even starts though when I install them.

I put ST's on my S6 and was pretty happy w/ them until the front driver's shock decided to crap out on me. They were a little soft but worked well for the height and tire size I ran. I know they're backed up w/ a 5 yr warranty and will have to call them up for replacement soon. The range on ST's are huge, I'm maybe around 25" from fender to ground level and still have over an 1 1/2" of coils left to go down.

Bob I was just in your neck of the woods and may have saw your ex's S6, light silver metalic like mine right?

Yep. If it was anywhere around here then that was it. Occasionally a random Atlas Grey S6 comes through town, 2-3 times a year I see it. Otherwise, any S6 in the neighborhood came from me!
I may bother you about the basic setting on the ST's. I'm not looking to slam this car, but 1.5"- 2" or so and still soft'ish would be okay with me.

I'm actually pretty stoked about this car. I was hoping it'd be nice enough and solid, but it's cleaned up fantastic. Interior is seriously as nice as you can hope for. unless it has more-than-normal issues it'll be a great driver for la long time.

Man. Those tail lights. Someone knew what they were doing.

I hope you like the ST's. I've heard the spring was designed for the passat equivalents and as such the heavier audi weight doesn't work too well.

I have the KW's which are the same as the ST only stainless steel. Won't rust, pretty cheap, and the quality is great, but the springs aren't that much stiffer than the stock ones.

It rides awesome for a daily driver, and my car is decently low and doesn't rub when I hit bumps and stuff. I think these softer springs and some stiff sway bars would be a good combination.
