    Questions on registering replacement battery

My battery is getting a bit weak I think, it shows 84% @ 12.7-12.8 volts I think some of this has to do with me working on the car at night with the interior lights on with the key in the ignition a few weeks ago. Doesn't help I've had the AC at full blast for the last two weeks with this heat wave.

I'm going to try and charge it first and see if that works. I did catch the cluster flicker the other night when I had the lights on while parked, with AC going as well. Carista showed me some codes that some things were limited due to voltage function to high. Haven't gotten any codes since or flickers since.

IF I do need a new battery does it NEED to be registered via VAG? Or can I use the memory power saver method when you plug into the OBDII and the cigarette lighter to maintain power to the car while the battery is being changed out.

    Questions on registering replacement battery

My guess is it's probably bad or going bad since it won't go past 75% to be charged. It will just end up trickle charging down to 3-4amps. Normal charge mode is like 13-14amps.

Alternator shows good, it's the battery that's coming up "bad" via the tester and the gentlemen at autozone. Which sometimes I do take with a grain of salt lol. I will have access to a VAG in about 2 weeks or so when I get down to my friends house in NJ. I'm wondering if I change the battery now and code it in about 3 weeks will it make a huge difference.

Here is also the battery I have in there now. After research I think this model is discontinued.

Came out this morning and the MMI battery thing only showed a notch over 50%. I don't want the car to turn off electronics while driving so I bite the bullet and got a new battery from the dealer. $220 later, pretty sure I can power up the east coast with this monster lol. Battery level now shows 100% and holding. I have not registered it but will sometime this week via my friends VAG.

    You bought it from Audi?

I replaced mine this winter with one from walmart, best price I could find after doing some research. Never registered the battery via VAG, no signs of any difference other than the car starts now lol

I did from Audi, it's essentially the same one as my OEM. Audi's battery's are actually non labeled interstate battery's in the US he said. My OEM one was a Varta but they look exactly the same. I looked at a identical Duralast from autozone for $175 but the cold start crank amps were a lot higher than my OEM I think 950cc and I didn't want to stress the starter out "possibly". That is a BITCH of a job to have done lol. The one from Audi is the exact same crank amps and reserve power, so I said screw it.

Did you replace yours before you got any lower power codes? I think all registering does is it tells the car it's a new battery so it knows you don't need to be in low power mode anymore. If you caught it before that or it died you probably don't need to register it so to speak. I would think.

Vanimal, no problem if the CCA of the replacement battery is more than the OEM rating. It just means you have more juice for starting. It will not overload or over-work the starter because the voltage is still the same.

If your car did not go into power saving mode, you do not need VAG to let the system know that the battery was replaced. It will just continue working as if nothing happened. If the car went into power saving mode, then you need to use VAG to let the system know that the battery is new so it will know to take the car off power saving mode. Using VAG is simple, in your case with your OEM battery, just enter your battery's new serial number. You should be good to go.
Current: 2016 S5 in Sepang Blue with Technik Package.

Awesome thanks! I guess I was probably overthinking it. I "think" it may have went into power saver the other night. I say this because the other night while parked at night with the AC on I got the dash cluster flicker and the idle dropped a tiny bit. It never died however. I just turned it off & restarted it and all was good.

My friend has a VAG so I'm stopping by his house on Weds night when he's done work to pop the new serial in since it will only take a few mins. I guess what happened to me would be considered it being in power saving mode? I popped open Carista and it said it did limit some things etc. I probably need to tell the car it's a new battery.

I assume waiting till Weds won't be SUPER harmful?

    Questions on registering replacement battery

Lol, been there with other cars in the past. Tried to be proactive this time before it dies on me haha.

There's a lot who didn't code them and have had success. Only reason I am is because my friend lives a few mins away who does work on my car and has a VAG do I figured why not.

Yeah I've heard of ppl who tried and it didnt work so never really got around to it.

This year I have a garage to park in so I think I'll put a battery tender on it this winter.

Coding can be complicated - I just ended up changing one digit of the serial number to let the car know it got a new battery

Thanks NPuter, I did searching the other day and did see your thread lol. I figured worst case I'll do the same. All we are really trying to do is trick the ECU to know its a new battery so it manages it correctly I assumed.
