I'm on the final end of a radiator replacement / timing belt / everything on the top of the engine repair. I also took this opportunity to change the ATF and filter in my 01V, as I had to drain all the fluid out of the transmission cooler with this project.
I'm following this fill procedure:
1) Start car. Using VAG-COM, monitor transmission block 004 for temperature.
2) At 35C, remove the fill plug and insert the ATF pump nozzle
3) Work through gears PRND, going 15 seconds between shifts.
4) Shift to P, get under the car and pump until dripping.
5) Back into the car, move through the gears.
Repeat until >40C, <45C
When I put the car in R or D, foot firmly on the brake the speedometer starts picking up speed and there's clunking and noise from the transmission. I'm guessing the friction plates are not engaging.
I've put nearly 7.5l in the case, and it always seems to be 'topped off' with each time I try to pump more in it.
A couple of things to note:
- The vehicle sat for a couple of weeks on blocks, so I'm guessing just about all of the fluid was in the pan when I drained it.
- All four wheels are off the ground (obviously). This symptom is a lot like when I had a front axle break on the highway - But that was because I couldn't prevent the one lost axle from spinning, so going to/from drive was actually engaging the loose output shaft.
Should I just keep repeating this process? It seems harmful to allow the transmission to 'pick up speed' but I'm not sure the fluid is getting into the clutches like it should be.
After this kind of radiator change, should I expect to be able to add more fluid, as if a new fill (9-9.5L)?
