    Carbonio Intake/APR

Alright, I've read just about every thread out there on the web on intakes.

I want to make the jump (I think, as I doubt intake will void a powertrain warranty/flag a TD1).
I've studied up, watched install videos and read pdf's on each (APR/Carbonio, Roc-Euro, USP) intake systems.

I really like the concept of the Carbonio that is still "in the box" and not just sitting in the engine bay separated by a heat shield. And I don't want a ton of supercharger whine that the R-E makes.

I'm a bit hesitant given my history of engine failure, and prior to that had a MAF failure linked to an aFe pro-dry filter. It took it 12 days to burn the MAF up after filter install in stock box and was about a $600 fix.

So I've decided on the Carbonio. And if I do that, I'm going to do the stage II carbon back pipe as well.

    My questions are this:
1- does the damn thing really fit? (most say yes, some say no) APR site lists it for SQ5 with a special note saying it doesn't fit in fine print.
2- I've never had to care for an oiled filter before (the reason I went with pro dry one before) and I'm afraid I'll over oil it.
Does it come pre-oiled out of the box? I know it's washable. But I could see me buying a new one when changing it potentially. What's the recommendation for cleaning it (mileage wise) or replacing?
3- does anyone else run this setup on their Q5/SQ5 currently? Any issues whatsoever?

At some point near end of warranty period, I'll go full stage 2 prob, so this will be the precursor to that.

Comments are welcomed. I'm still thinking about it currently.

Also, what about the S-Flo from AWE? Anyone know if it fits?

I'm very skeptical of any gains with any aftermarket intake kit. I just replaced the factory filter with the stock replacement. The aftermarket set ups are virtually identical to the stock set up. The only difference is the aftermarket set ups removing the stock sound baffles. I'd be surprised if removing the baffles created more than a few horsepower due to more linear air flow. I'd say aftermarket set ups are primarily for more sound, not power.

The carbonio doesn't fit the facelift S/Q5s very well. I bought one and decided not to use it based on the poor fitment.

Get one of these and call it a day. Maybe a aftermarket air filter too.

If want to dress it up the AWE carbon cover looks nice but costs a bundle. I think it's just a New lid to the oem box.

Oh and the 034 inlet pipe hose makes no more sound than stock.

    Might be a thought there.

I'm still on the fence between oiled intake vs stock.

I do like the dress up carbon of the AWE though, I'm be lying if I didn't.

Advantages to the 034 hose vs the AWE one?

Just ordered the 034 inlet hose & going to pick up the carbon goods from AWE and run OEM filter.

Done! Waaaay to worried about oiling the other filters.

I appreciate all the feedback. Thanks everyone.

Is there an aftermarket filter element worth trying to replace OEM? I have the 034 hose, but will probably keep the OEM box unless some real improvement is to be had.

After researching the crap out of this, I don't really think so.

Some here are running USP (I think @S-Fore does).
That one and the Roc-Euro are both open concept systems that eliminates the box completely and just separates the filter (oiled) from the engine with a heat shield.

I want the box myself. So I was down to Carbonio (APR) vs S-Flo (AWE)

APR has fitment issues apparently, so I chose the 034 hose (as its specifically fit for the Q5/SQ5, and will be dressing up the box but using the stock filter, as that is an option with the AWE box.

It's worth it to me for engine compartment.

    Check fitment here.

I run a modded oem airbox with an EC filter and 034 tube. I ran the EC tube from my S4 but the angle is off slightly and I had it really clamped down on the airbox. So, I spent the money on the 034 one for perfect fitment. The EC tube is actually better constructed IMO. Anyway, does the job, but as I said above, I'd do the ECS intake if I did a whole new one. If I keep the car, I may.

Sounds like you've made up your mind already, but a few random notes regarding what's been discussed...

    - It seems a lot of the intakes have a slight fitment problem with the S/Q5 based on some fundamental difference with the S4/S5. The heat shield doesn't line up/mount properly, so anything that uses those stock mount locations will probably be slightly off. Roc-euro has a special bracket that they supply to fix the issue, but I wasn't too crazy about it.

    - 2 things I don't like about RE: the intake tube is a steel pipe welded together (a powder coated exhaust pipe) and the bracket they supplied for the heat shield looked like it was made in high school shop class (welded steel again). The steel tube I'm sure has some serious acoustic resonance and probably why most consider it the loudest. It also has a high thermal mass and is going to transfer more heat to the incoming air (maybe not significant but unnecessary). As for the heat shield bracket, I wouldn't put it on any nice vehicle I own. Both of these piece should be aluminum...(or plastic/rubber/silicon for the tube). The nail in the coffin for me was the wire tie used to secure the breather hose and filter. As an engineer, I just don't like RE's approach to these intake kits.

    - The CTS intake has a mandrel bent aluminum tube (like just about every other aftermarket intake) and a legit little aluminum bracket for the breather hose. They could take a page out of RE's book and make a heat shield bracket, but I can't imagine the S/Q5 intake market is big enough to warrant such a thing. I simply came up with my own mounting solution for the CTS heat shield, which also raises the shield up a bit and gets it closer to actually making contact with the hood. The parts they provide in their kit met my approval, so that's what I run.

    - I've read a couple credible posts that the open air elements see more gains than the box...regardless of little to no true heat shielding with the open air. If you don't like the amount of heat it sees (I don't either), apparently it's still better than being limited to a confined space surrounding the element. With that said, going with the s-flow filter, 034 tube, and modding the airbox probably accomplishes similar gains and is the cheapest option. I would definitely modify the box based on what I've read though. I think I remember people logging higher boosts with the open air element too.

    - No need to worry about a TD1. Although they could easily give you one for having an intake, just spend the 15 min to swap back to stock before going in, and it's a moot issue.

    - The 3.0T doesn't have a MAF, so the oiled filter is a moot issue as well.

I'm pretty sure most tuners have seen a small
but very noticeable gain from an intake on the 3.0t. Some have even published the results, and others have discussed it on the forum. I'll reiterate what I said in the other post- I even think there's some measurable improvement that can be seen with simple VCDS logs. No, an intake isn't something you're going to notice in the butt dyno, but I certainly don't think it's to be overlooked if you want to squeeze all the easy (and fun) power out of this platform.

My results on the intake experiments, so far: I could not get reliable ship dates or returned phone calls from Roc Euro, so I shopped around some more and discovered the CTS system at Ecs tuning, AWE, APR, and some others. The carbonio option from APR doesn't fit, the AWE is pricey, but seems like an option for those wanting less noise, for probably less gains, and the ECS option. Well, I went with the ECS option and really like the gains, the noise levels (so far), the build quality, but the intake hose being metal didn't seem like the best choice due to heat. I ordered and installed the 034 silicone hose and got gains that have been setting off codes. Had my shop dial back the tune (I'm stage 2 with custom tune) to prevent the engine codes, and it's running well. They believe the extra air flow may have stripped the actuator in the throttle body slightly, because it's made of plastic and they break often, i'm told. It's holding for the time being. I think the 034 house may actually be a larger diameter than the metal one the came with the ECS. I'll have to inspect closer.

Use the 034 inlet hose with a Dryflow filter and open up the oem intake housing. More flow than you will need even with stage 2.

After doing the same research on our SQ5 I went with the 034 intake tube, AFE S-Flo filter and modified the stock airbox. Gains were very noticeable after those rounds of mods. The poster who did the write up on modifying the stock airbox used a bunch of testing equipment to validate his findings. In the end the stock airbox modified will allow an additional 1psi of boost under WOT. Took me maybe an hour to modify the airbox and put everything back together.
