2.0T Auto: Clicking noise under engine braking

I have a strange noise every time the vehicle engine brakes coasting down a hill or slight incline. It sounds like a clicking noise or slight rattle, always the same tone, pitch and speed. The only thing I can come up with is the timing belt tensioner is rattling? Although I replaced the system about 10K miles ago.

As soon as I putt the vehicle in neutral, accelerate and/or the tranny free spins, the noise goes away instantly.

Any ideas? I can live with it, but if this is an issue that has been found before, I wouldn't mind fixing it at some point.

    thanks guys!

If it goes away in neutral, I'm more inclined to think it's something in your drive train, way behind the t-belt tenrioner.

    Where is the noise located?
    Looked at your CV joints?
Drive shaft joints and/or center bearing?

Noise location is unknown, although I will try running my go pro it different areas to pinpoint better. It could be a CV joint, it does sound a little mellower then what a CV joint sounds like when its bad while turning. It's the engine braking when the noise starts, if the motor has not loaded up going down a hill, it will be fine.

Check this thread too. Wastegate rattle. Read posts 19 and 23 in particular. I could imagine the exhaust pressure of being off-throttle making the wastegate and linkage rattle around.

Perfect!!!! thanks so much, that sounds just like what it is. Like a bike coasting down the road, funny, as I was trying to think of a similar noise. I will check/adjust and report back....

Also, pertaining to #19 of that post, I have poor throttle responds at low RPM that happened recently it seems.

Ohh, and I also have stage-1 APR tune (sadly, now I REALLY want to go to JHM, oh well, stuck with APR)

Update: when I was swapping my cat this weekend, I found the wastegate to be very loose. Backed off the 10mm but on the actuator rod, adjusted the wastegate nice and snug. No more noise! And boost is back much sooner..

Strange that this must have been like this front the factory!
