Came up from the truck - I had zero time to respond other than getting it out of my wife's side (came from the passenger side of the truck right to her side of the car). Could have been worse...could have been a lot worse. Ended up covered in glass though...

Course - truck is long gone, so this is on my dime. 3rd no fault accident in 3 months (3 different cars)...insurance company is going to love me :(

Wow... So glad you and your wife are ok though. That's some very scary sh*t right there. I do a lot of highway miles and even thinking about this happening to me gives me the chills.

Don't forget the mental/emotional damage... If that happened to me I'd be afraid to drive behind any truck again

After seeing final destination I don't hang around big trucks very long. Actually I started avoiding then when I was a tire guy for large trucks and saw numerous accidents that resulted from retread being chunked and has the cage save my life a few times. The worst one was when they had a wheel off. 200+ lbs of tire going at 80

Glad to hear you and your wife escaped injury, and that's the most important thing. I'm always cringe when I see pieces of tire tread on the freeway, as you can never tell when a car or truck in front of you will kick a piece up, or that I'll run over a piece big enough to take out the front bumper and the intercooler or the oil pan, etc.

As mentioned by the swoleguy, at least it didn't take out an A pillar or the front edge of the roof. Saw this S4 at the collision center that's fixing our car: guy hit a deer, and will probably need a new hood, roof, headliner, dashboard cover, etc. It was quite the mess, but again, nobody seriously injured from what I was told.

Did the deer fall from the sky? How did he hit a deer and not suffer front-end damage?

The tread was most likely throw backward, so it probably hit you relative to like 120 mph. How's the hood

About your windshield and the truck's retread...

Did the tire piece hit your car while it was still in the air? I know this sounds crazy but it was a question I asked when a piece of tire hit my wife's car on route 81 when we were heading back home from Virginia Tech one night. My insurance agent told me that the reason was that if the tire piece came off of the truck and hit the car while in the air, the State Farm would pay 100% of the damage. Otherwise, we would have to pay the deductible.
In the final seconds of your life, just before your killer is about to dispatch you to that great eternal darkness, what would you rather have in your hand? A cell phone or a gun?

As for the piece - it was in the air. Basically skipped off the hood (where you see those marks) right into the windshield. There's no damage to the front bumper at all...

I'm already out $370 for the tow. Since this was on the PA turnpike, you need to use 'their' tow system...and since it's an accident, AAA doesn't cover the tow. I'm turning it over to the insurance this morning...we'll see what they say.

$400 tow? How the fuck is that not considered gouging. PA is a bunch of profiteers.

I could have 'waived' my charges if I would have taken it to their shop and transported my car from there once the insurance was ready to deal with it. I'm sure that would have come with some '$200 per day' space renal - plus the cost of the tow to the new location. They are crooks - that's for sure.

In comment to your last post - the hood is not dented, but has that rubber streak on it. I was able to peel it some with my thumb, so maybe it can be buffed...interested to see how it looks underneath. Maybe they'll need to do the clear coat?

Well - if it means anything, I drove a 1/4 mile like Ace Ventura to get to a better pull off area on the turnpike.

Glad to hear you guys are ok! Probably was laying in the road already and got kicked up by the truck.

I had a 3 ft piece of angled steel come through my windshield before. I know the feeling and the way those super fine pieces of glass feel. Took years to get them all out of the car.

I always think of final destination when I'm behind a truck with an unsecured load. Good reactions, especially to attempt to save your loved one, good on you. It's amazing how many accidents I've responded to with debris penetrating the windshield/passenger compartment....trust me this could have been much worse.

Yes, a lot of marriages are like another movie, "War of the Roses." The husband would have moved the car purposely so the wife's side gets taken out!! And you know how women always bring up things from the past - well now you can always say, "you know....rememebr that day on the PA Turnpike?...."

I'm guessing the more vertical the screen the less it will deflect, but lots of it is luck in the trajectory, weight, shape of the projectile.
