Hi guys, could anyone please provide estimated dealership vs independent repair shop cost to replace timing chain/cam tensioner?

I have mild ticking noise worse with increasing rpm only when engine is hot.

Correct. If you have excess slack in your timing chain at high mileage, then you might hear that. At 44k, this is not likely. You are prolly just hearing valvetrain noise which is expected. Got video (if it can pick it up properly)?

DPD314 and Allowencer, THANK you, I am posting a youtube video right now and will place a link. If needed, I can take another video for you guys. Really appreciate it. the Dealership didn't find anything wrong with it. I just want to make sure it's not going to cause me to get stranded or hurt the engine.

I took it to dealership, they replaced my pcv valve for nearly 600 but didn't find anything wrong. no faults/codes. it drives fine. you can't hear with windows rolled up. any ideas? noise not really there when car is cold.

On the intake manifold look for the n80 purge valve. It feeds gas vapors from the charcoal canister into the intake manifold. It only operates once the car is at temperature. Some can be very loud. Put your hand on the valve and see if it matches the frequency you hear the trick. I do not know if it's frequency increases with RPM. My next suggestion is do an oil change in case somehow there may be fuel dilution or wrong spec oil and possiblely thinning out to much when warm. Almost sounds like hydraulic lifter tick. You may even try putting marvel mystery oil in the oil for 500 miles then change the oil.

Not sure what year the car is but that milage is still under the warranty phase. If the year is too, you should not be paying anything.

I will try your recs out since it's easy and affordable. will first start with a fresh oil change and check this part out. Thanks for your help.

The car is out of warranty, 2010.

here is the challenge, I don't think I will be able to get this N80 valve replaced as my 2010 has a cheap plastic hose on one end. I found the whole hose assembly but it looks hard to install due to the middle hose. check it out:

is it safe to just replace without the entire hose assembly?

The part number I have is 06H 906 517 H for the N80 purge regulator.

Did the ticking sound match the vibration felt in the N80? You should be able to unplug the electrical connector. It will trigger a fault for evap system disconnected but it stop the ECU from cycling the valve to see if the tick goes away.

    Yes here are three quotes:

Audi Dealer - Minimum $4100 for parts and labor. Damaged valves will be an additional charge.
Independent - Drive Auto Works in Jersey quoted me $3000 including valves.
Independent when you buy parts - This is what I had done. I paid for complete timing kit for $1000 and paid Drive Auto $1500 in labor for a total of $2500 and that included all 16 valves, tensioners, guides, covers and chains.

Okay guys update: I added 1/2 quart oil because MMI was just below 1/2 mark. The next day I drove it, the loud ticking noise went away. Drove down highway for 30 minutes, quiet as can be. Driving smoothly. Very weird. I had dealer replace oil 3k ago. I can't prove they did as there is no dipstick. I remember it was weird that the oil was not full when they gave the car back to me. It was requested along with a ton of there stuff so there is a chance they didn't do it. So I will do oil change this week. I hope the noise does not come back but I will check the N80 valve if it does by unplugging it as suggested. I went ahead and ordered a dip stick and full oil Change kit from ECS (OEM filter, drain plug, mobile 1). Something is up but I hope and pray this fixes it for good. Thanks a ton from all of you!
