    Condensation under oil cap?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Got my car a week ago and decided to check the oil this morning. Noticed a little bit of a milky looking substance under the cap. There's no gunk, just kinda looks like bubbles. From searching it looks like it could be the head gasket or condensation. I haven't noticed any smoke from the exhaust, so I'm hoping it's just condensation. I only drive about 11 miles a day, 5.5 in the morning a 5.5 in the evening. The car runs great and smoothly, no CELS. Coolant looks fine, no brown milkshake and doesn't seem to be losing any.

Should I try taking it for a nice long, spirited drive to try to clear it out? Change the oil? Other thoughts?

Likely condensation. Can happen with short drives, don't think you have anything to worry about.

Also, there wasn't any on the dipstick when I pulled it out.

No condensation. I know I'd definitely have a problem if there was no oil on it! Lol

    Thanks for the quick reply!

I wouldn't worry about it. That's just oil that sits in the oil cap cutout of the valve cover. Doesn't get mixed up in the engine, it's probably just sat there for a while. If you just got the car it wouldn't hurt to change the oil just to feel safe but I wouldn't worry.

Thanks! I was just thinking the same thing. I know Audi recommends 5w-40, but it seems harder to find in my area. Would 0w-40 be just as good?

I use 5W-40 on my 3.2. I know a lot of guys run 0W-40 for winter because it starts much better in the cold so it's fine to use also. You might burn a tiny bit more oil because it's thinner but not a noticeable amount. My service manual actually recommends 5W-30 and I know that's pretty easy to find if you want to go that route. All of those I listed are fine to run in these cars, I just like 5W-40 because I think it's best for track use. Just personal opinion. I might run 0W for winter this year, haven't decided yet.

Agree - Most likely condensation. Definitely take that baby out for a good, long spirited drive to get the oil hot for at least a half hour or more to drive the water out of it. Do this once a week. A 5.5 mile drive hardly gets your engine up to operating temperature where it likes to run and is best to maintain its health. Also consider taking the long way to work or home. With such short daily drives you should consider changing your oil more often than normal.

Change the oil and do a flush.
