Spark Plug Wire Plastic Sheath Deteriorated

I'm about to replace my spark plugs and I was inspecting the wires. The ribbed plastic sheath is crumbling when I apply the slightest pressure to it. I imagine it could be more than 15 years old as it's a 2001 C5 A6.

When I remove the cables, I imagine they will fall apart on me. The cable underneath looks to be in good condition. Is this plastic cover important and if so, where can I get replacements?

That's just generic plastic wire covers. You can pick them up at pretty much any auto parts store, Walmart or any auto stereo shop. The only purpose for them on spark plug wires is for some extra protection against rubbing on stuff.
