MMI adapter for newer Apple iPhones/iPods?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey all, I've had my 2016 S4 for a few weeks and it's been an awesome car! The only thing I'm trying to figure out right now is the integration with MMI. There is an adapter in the glove box that is for the older style iPhones, I think it's called a 30 pin connector, and my iPhone 6s has the smaller lightning connector.

Basically I need this, but a lot longer so I can keep the phone in a cup holder, but so that I can charge the phone and listen to audio at the same time - https://amzn.com/B00MPO23IQ

The one that is in the glove box now works, I have a small adapter to go from 30 pin to lightning, but it's very short.

Do any of you recommend a particular brand/etc that would work?

Just get a lightning extension cable. There's no oem solution for your need.

Just curious, how do you direct your cable from the glove box to somewhere easier to reach? I tried a cable like this before but it made my glove box hard to close and almost broke my cable after a while.

I removed my glove box, cut a hole behind the MMI plug, and routed the cable over top of the glove box and through the center dash.

Why don't you pair your iPhone via Bluetooth and stream music and other audio? I do that in my S5. I use a USB charger in the armrest compartment for charging the phone if necessary. I have an old iPod in the glovebox on the AMI connector. I keep my stored music there and can control it from the steering wheel or MMI knob. I do Pandora ect on the iPhone and control it from the phone.

I do this now, but when I plugged my phone into the MMI directly, there was a noticeable difference in sound quality. That's the main reason.

I don't know about the OP but I hate using Bluetooth because I have to wait a minute or two after I started my car for music / nav app to start streaming. I don't use the music app so i have to play the music manually while driving. It's kinda uncomfortable.

It wasn't too bad. The glove box is held in place by roughly a dozen bolts. Once I figured out where they all were, the hardest part was trying to decide where to make the hole. I also slid the radio out in order to run the cable, which is super easy (need radio removal tools though).

Understood. I usually use an iPod classic plugged in to AMI unless I'm streaming Pandora. Does sound a bit better. I wonder--- Could one use an iPod touch on the Audi Connect wifi and plug IT in direct to AMI for listening to Pandora? Would THAT yield better sound quality since it eliminated Bluetooth?

I have a Panavise phone holder that's next to the vent, so I had the cable exit at the top right corner of the radio.

    +1

The top cable is the one I'm using in conjunction with a 3' extension cable (30 pin).

I already have the 'official apple' extension adapter in that first picture, I used it all the time in my RS4 in combination with the adapter I had in it that replaced the stock satellite radio receiver, worked great.

So I got this lightning extension cable - https://amzn.com/B01HP6LB2M and it plugs into that lightning to 30 pin adapter, which plugs into the MMI adapter :) It works, so I'm happy. Charges my phone and I can listen to audio coming off of it at the same time which is what I was after. Thanks dudes.

If you have an iPhone 6 and up beware of the Audi lightning cable. I have not been able to get it to work with my iPhone 6. It connects and starts to charge and play, then 20 seconds later it disconnects. Works fine with a 6th Gen iPod touch though.

SiriusXM sound quality is much better when streaming from the app vs using the satellite signal

Yes, the 30 pin adapter and cable perfectly. I have both the lightning cable and the 30 pin cable w/ adapter and it is disappointing that the lightning cable doesn't work.
