    Another oil thread

I am due for a change and will be sending out my oil for an analysis via Blackstone. I will report back with the findings, I'm currently running Liqui Molly 5W40. I have probably been doing too much reading for my own good on the engine oil break down. BUT my question is does anyone other than the user RS4Power from long ago have any experience with (RLI) Renewable Lubricants Bio-SynXtra SAE 5W40? The stuff is actually listed as Audi RS4 formulated on the website.

I used to go out of my way to obtain the fabled unicorn oils such as Amsoil, Motul, and Liqui Moly. The too long dont read: Stop worrying and use Mobil 1 0w40. It is really good oil.

It's not worth the effort or money to run the high end Liqui Moly, Motul, and especially not the RLI. The RLI never proved to have any effect on carbon deposits. I did several UOAs on the moly top tec 4200, which is supposed to be the best shit. Mobil 1 0w40 got better wear numbers on the same OCI.

You can get Mobil 1 0w40 or German Castrol 0w40 from your local Walmart for super cheap. You can also get both of them and an oil filter from Amazon for cheap. If you want to go the Castrol route make sure it has "Made in Germany" printed on the bottle.

I've been using the RLI for a while, seems to be great for about 3k miles then it starts using oil. To be fair I saw the same thing with liqui-moly though. I haven't tried the Mobil1 or Castrol in the rs4. The Q7s I run and have been happy with Castrol 0w40 A3/B4, which is also recommended by Castrol for the RS4.

I just bought 20 quarts of moly top tec as both needed oil changes. No RLI here.

I'm with Komseh, ran motul, lubromoly, etc. after oil analyses, Mobil 1 always proved to be the best and never looked back since.

It's the cheapest Group IV oil that is readily available ($22.88 for a 5 quart jug at Wal Mart). It shears down to a 30 weight oil pretty quickly, and because it is a 40 weight oil, is allowed to have higher ZDDP levels under API-SN than a 20 or 30 weight oil. Additionaly, 0 cold weight means less startup wear.

It's one of the best all around oils out there, especially for the price.

M1 0w40 because its certified to meet Audi/VW specs, works well in most climates one would see in North America, and it's just a really good oil.

I tried it a few times, but my car seems to burn the M1 0w-40 quicker than the Pennzoil Euro 5W-40 which is my go to. Since we have carbon issues at baseline, I just went back to the Pennzoil which Amazon just ships to my house.

I was using Motul Specific 5w40 and was amazed at how fast I was burning oil. Also, was running super hot as well (almost in the 240s while city driving) so I switched to mobil1 0w40 and its been night and day. Great stuff!

As I talked about in another thread, I've been using Mobil1 0w40 ever since I got the car in March '03 with 53k miles. Now 3+ years later with 105k on the odo and many track days, my Blackstone reports are pretty much perfect. As komseh said, for the climates here in North America it works great and it's overall just a very good oil. Wouldn't look past that unless you have a very specific application/use case/climate to deal with.

Interesting, I just switched it up and went with Motul Specific from Lubro-Moly Top Tech 5w30. I'll have to monitor my oil consumption/temps and next change may very well be M1.

Anyone have experience with Shell Rotella T6 5W40? It is in Audi/VW spec for the RS4, and considering price, seems like a great buy. I would love some thoughts on this.

    Also: best oil filter?

Rotella T6 is also a really good oil. A 0W40 would be better for year-round use in Chicago. Don't forget about the German Castrol 0W40.

    Another oil thread

I asked about the Shell because I've seen it on sale at AutoZone for 100/ 5 gallons.

I ask about the oil filter because a buddy of mine is a Mercedes guy and swears by felt oil filters...

    Just trying to gain information.

Interesting, I've never given much consideration to the oil filter. I just use the OEM MAHLE (~$17-ish ?). What are the different types of filters and what do they change? My guess would be "not much", but I'm curious nonetheless.

I find it pretty crazy that a different brand of oil/weight will change our oil consumption?

As far as oil filters i would choose the one with the most surface area? I've only used oem, they're not that expensive compared to some of the other stuff for our cars.

Rotella T6 is not VW/Audi spec (not even VW 502.00). It's a better oil for turbocharged applications, but probably not the best for our cars.

Considering price, the best option is Mobil1 0w40, which is $22.88 at for 5 quarts ($4.58/qt) at Wal Mart.

Everyone is talking about cheap Mobil 1 0W-40 -- but its about $40 on Amazon (for a 4 pack of 5 quart jugs) that is actually Prime available:

Yeah, that's pretty expensive $8.04/quart If you could get it under 4 bux per quart then that's a great deal. Till then, Walmart got you covered at ~$4.58/quart

    I found this:

    https://www.audiusa.com/content/dam/...e-Bulletin.pdf

really helpful, though almost too many options. (Rotella T6 NOT being one of them- thanks for pointing that out)

Now, about those oil filters.....anything above and beyond the MAHLE that's available?
