Is it worth trying a new brake switch in this situation?

    Hello-

I'm new to this forum but not to cars/forums in general. We recently picked up an 05 a6 3.2. 82k miles and in incredible condition. I knowingly inherited a few common issues (price reflected it). The typical g201 Brake Pressure sensor - Inplausible signal, and 01316 - abs control module read trouble codes - intermittent.

This is causing the obnoxious beeping and abs/esp/emergency brake warning lights.

    So:

I replaced the brake switch last night (with oe part from the dealer). All three warnings disappeared immediately. I drove the car twice, once for about 15 miles, the other was a short jaunt. The third time I drove it, the warnings returned.

I have read more about the switch and now understand that the switch breaks internally when installed. My method of installation was to (with the vehicle off) remove the old switch, insert and twist/lock in position the replacement, and then plug in the harness. I did not depress the pedal, first start the car and depress pedal, pull back the pedal, or anything, simply insert, twist, plug in.

Was this procedure incorrect? I'm seeing mixed information online. I would guess that the ABS module needs rebuilding, or the pressure sensor itself is faulty, however the fact that the codes cleared with the initial switch installation makes me wonder if I simply ruined a very sensitive part and it's worth trying another, or if it's just more likely that I need to proceed to the ABS module rebuild.

    Thank you!

I am not familiar with the piece you reference or the procedure for install. However, I would think that if you broke the new sensor upon install, the fault would not go away. I am a firm believer that, without fully understanding the cause of the issue, start with the least expensive items first then go from there. If the sensor is not a huge expense, then I would start there.

Thank you. The Brake switch fits under the dash and sense the location/throw/pressure applied to the brake pedal. When you insert it and lock it in place, you "break" internal tabs which essentially "set" the switches position. In other threads it sounds pretty common that they are not correctly installed and hence destroyed. 23 bucks OEM at my local dealer is cheap, but not free for another if in fact it isn't likely to be the culprit. Hopefully someone familiar with the part/fault will chime in.

I appreciate your feedback and thoughts.

The switch is fine. Its your ABS unit.

This just started with my A6 and a quick VCDS scan showed that the brake pressure sensor 1 was having faults causing all three lights to go on.

Its common on the 05 and 06 models.

This website will fix it for $235 and send it back to you with a lifetime warranty. Its a steal compared to a new one for over $1000.
