I've actually been trying to figure this one out too (vegan girlfriend). From a bit of a web search I found some companies, VW included, use a sort of Vynil instead of genuine leather. It's cheaper and nobody would know the difference. But I cannot confirm this.

I'm trying to figure it out so I can buy the right type of cleaning product and conditioner if it is leather.

I use leather conditioner on my car (just some admiral goo stuff) and it works just fine.

You get both. The middle is leather and the sides are vinyl.

^^this. Only the seating surfaces are leather. Side bolsters, tops and back are vinyl. The good thing I guess is the bolsters don't crack the same way genuine leather does. Use any leather/vinyl cleaner like Lexol or Mothers. I use Collinite 855 leather and vinyl wax for protection. Keeps it supple and doesn't smell strong like many other products on the market.

FYI - easy way to tell if your seat material is vinyl or leather is to use the tip of your index finger to push down hard on the material. If it's vinyl, the indentation will have relatively smooth sides all round; if leather, the indentation will show more wrinkles. Test it out using any household chair (leather or vinyl) if you want confirmation. My 2c worth.

With our seats its a bit different. The leather test will work the same, but if you push down hard on Audi vinyl, you can tell its vinyl because it cracks and flakes off......
