    1.8t conversion options

    Hello guys!

week ago I bought a4 2002 with totaled engine. Right now I'm searching for a used one, and I came across to the engine codes ( mine AVJ i belive) Then I was start searching for them and found out that only big differences is throttle body: ordinary or electrical opening... but there are many options of those engines. I believe there are some small differences between them... But then I search for the engine I got and in my location they are not available. But the Audi a6 C5 1.8t are very common at my place and they are also very reliable. I couldn't see any big difference between them... So my question is : Somebody did this kind a conversion from a6? Whats the differences and whats the guidelines to do this? thanks
sorry if there was this kind of conversation, i did't found it...

Short-blocks are all the same. Head's vary - some have VVT and others dont. AEB heads are big port, no VVT or SAI. That being said you can swap the cam tensioner from your current head into the new one if it does not have VVT. SAI can be deleted if you get an AEB head that doesnt have provisions for it.

Swap all the accessories from the current engine onto the new one.

Shortblocks are absolutely not all the same. There's an early and late design that have totally different water pump and oil pump set ups. You could use either one, but there are differences. Also, the end of the crankshaft is machined differently depending on whether it's from a car with an automatic or manual transmission, so which ever engine you get make sure you get one from a car with the same type of transmission.

The A6 didn't come with the 1.8t in the USA, but I couldn't imagine any reason why it wouldn't swap over relatively easily.

Yes that's correct, my bad. The 058 block will not work in a B6. All 06a blocks are the same, which are found in most cars produced after 1999 (correct me if I'm wrong here)

058 blocks were used in up to 99.5 (AEB) and 2000 (ATW) a4s. The 2001 model year has the first 06A block (AWM)

Of course an 058 block would work, but it would be far more work than I would want to do.

As for the same code, nobody here would know because north america only got AMB. It seems like the AVJ is a 150hp version. However, just about any 1.8t will work as long as it is an 06a block, which is anything out of a late B5 or any B6. Some of the ancillaries may be different, so keep all your old stuff.

Leave the wires and original ECU. What happened to the original engine that it needs to be replaced? Pretty well any engine code except for AEB and ATW can be used, even transverse engines (VW Golf, Jetta, A3, etc) can be used as long as you use your original accessories.

when I bought the car Owner sad that something with the oil pressure is bad... So one day i thought maybe it's the pump, so take off the oil pan and there i saw engine parts laying around ( twisted rod, piston finger, bolts etc...) and then i saw a hole in the engine block. So i guess owner was right, the oil pressure was bad :D

So all you'll need is the long block. Don't worry about any of the accessories or anything, use the ones that are in the car already.
